YES. Kids also need sunglasses. Though the new generation is now in to gadget games, still kids are exposed more to sun light as most kids are fond of playing outdoor games. During summer vacations, kids spend more time outdoors and it is advisable to wear sunglasses for protection.

Harmful sunlight, called ultra violet rays would affect the eyes. Exposure to sunlight on long run would lead to conditions called as pterygium, pinguecula, cataract and macular degeneration. Photo keratitis, is a condition where the symptoms would be presented in the evenings as sore eyes after exposure to UV rays, which is usually misunderstood as tired eyes.

The eye has its natural protecting mechanism by stopping some percentage of UV rays but cannot resist the harmful rays. Hence every parent should worry about their child’s eyes when they are being exposed to sunlight. It is more important to wear sunglasses even during the cloudy weather as the UV rays get scattered more in cloudy atmosphere.

How to select the sunglasses for kids?

One should choose sunglasses which are high impact-resistance lenses. e.g polycarbonate. This would also help the kid while playing. Spring hinges would help in reducing the pressure on the side shafts of the goggles or goggles with elastic band would be comfortable. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat along with the sunglasses would protect the kid from exposure to the UV rays.

The color of the sunglasses would not determine the level of UV protection but, the lens material and the coatings would do. Look for the mark UVA & UVB block label on the sunglasses. Polarized lenses are the best to cut the glare from the surfaces of grass, sand, concrete roads and from water.

Do not worry if your kid is wearing spectacles. Prescription sunglasses are available in the market to give the vision and to enjoy the comfort of sunglasses.

Improper selection of the sunglasses would lead to poor optical quality, poor visual hygiene and the physical discomfort.

You would provide a pleasurable vision to your kids by providing them the appropriate sunglasses. Consider this as an important accessory while shopping.
