Foundation stone for
Silver Jubilee building laid

Mr VC Janardan Rao, Chairman, Veljan Hydrair Ltd., Hyderabad laid the foundation stone for the new Silver Jubilee building at LVPEI's Kallam Anji Reddy campus, Hyderabad. Named after Mr Janardan Rao's mother, the Velamati Soubhagyavathamma

Building will house the new patient care center as well as a state-of-the-art operating theatre complex. Along with Mr Janardan Rao, who is the major donor for the project, his daughter Ms Uma Devi, Dr Gullapalli N Rao (Chair, LVPEI), Dr G Chandra Sekhar (Director, Hyderabad campus), Dr D Balasubramanian (Director – Research) and others were present at the occasion on June 20, 2011.


 

LVPEI's City Centre at Siripuram, attached to the GMR Varalakshmi campus at Visakhapatnam was formally inaugurated by Dr D Purandareswari, MP on June 11, 2011. The program was attended by local donors, well-wishers and members of the press.

AWARDS AND HONORS

Dr G Chandra Sekhar, Director, LVPEI, Hyderabad campus received the "Vivekanand Award" from Vivekanand Netralaya, which is presented to stalwarts in the field of ophthalmology to acknowledge their outstanding work. The award was presented to him on June 11, 2011 at Miraj.

Dr Subhabrata Chakrabarti has been awarded the WGA Research Award for 2010 in basic sciences. This is the highest award of the World Glaucoma Association, given for a body of research work done in clinical and basic sciences in glaucoma over a period of time along with evidence of significant publications and honors.

He has also been selected to serve on the ARVO Annual Meeting Future Site Selection Working Group.


F1000: The article "Intracameral perfluoropropane gas in the treatment of acute corneal hydrops" by S Basu, PK Vaddavalli, SI Murthy, VS Sangwan (Ophthalmology 2011 May) was selected and evaluated by Shahzad Mian, a Member of the Faculty of 1000 (F1000), which places the work in the journal's library of the top 2% of published articles in biology and medicine. The service is widely used to find significant new research articles, and the inclusion of the article significantly increases its visibility.


ARVO International Travel Grants for the 2011 ARVO Annual Meeting held at Fort Lauderdale, Florida during May 1 to 5, 2011 have been awarded to Dr Indumathi Mariappan, Dr Ashik Mohamed and Mr Pesala Veerendranath.

Global Academy of Eye Care Education for Vizag campus

Our major donor, Mr Krishna Pathak from Dubai is supporting the creation of a "Global Academy of Eye Care Education" with a "Centre for Eye care Education' at LVPEI's GMR Varalakshmi campus at Vizag. He is also supporting a similar centre at LVPEI, Bhubaneswar.

 
Ophthalmology fellows' graduation

The ophthalmology fellows' graduation ceremony was celebrated on June 30, 2011, with the first batch of comprehensive ophthalmology fellows from GMR Varalakshmi campus, Visakhapatnam, and the first batch of Diplomate of the National Board (DNB) residents from Kallam Anji Reddy campus graduating. The celebrations began with an address by Chairman Dr Gullapalli N Rao, followed by an interesting video presentation on the achievements and nostalgic memories of the outgoing fellows. The day ended with a dinner and dance party hosted by

the Education
Centre.

Hi all,

I am Amandeep S Narang from Pune, an IT professional. I was blessed with a baby boy on 5th March 2011. Two months later we came to know that the baby was suffering from a cataract in the right eye.

We were stunned and feeling very helpless, wondering what we could do to save his vision. We raced around to get eye check-ups done from the best eye specialists and hospitals from Nagpur, Pune and Bombay, as per the suggestions of our near and dear ones. Days passed, but we did not find a solution to my child's problem as every doctor had his own opinion but was not ready to take up surgery due to the age of the baby. They are very strong pillars of this institute. About Dr Amit Gupta, all I can say is, "God understands our prayers even when we can't find the words to say them!" My family and I will always be thankful to them.

My experience with L V Prasad Eye Institute was beyond my expectations. With their help such a major surgery happened so smoothly and, in no time, they offered me a safe and healthy future for my child. Thanks from the core of my heart to Dr Amit Gupta, Premila and Pravin…indeed you are real saviours!



L V Prasad Eye Institute's Venkatadri Chowdary campus at Tadigadapa, Vijayawada launched its Surgical Services on June 20, 2011. Dr Niranjan Pehere performed the first cataract surgery, followed by another one by Dr Sujata Das from Bhubaneswar campus. The state-of-the-art operating rooms are one of the best in the LVPEI network and in the entire coastal Andhra Pradesh area.
