LVPEI's GMR Varalakshmi tertiary centre in Visakhapatnam crossed another milestone with the soft launch of Phase 1 of the LVPEI City Centre at Siripuram.
This eco-friendly centre has the sophisticated EyeSmart software, which enables us to examine patients without using paper — first of its kind in Visakhapatnam! Located in the heart of the city, the centre aims to provide comprehensive eye care services to those who would like a quick, complete eye examination after working hours as the centre would be open until 8 pm from Monday to Saturday. Those requiring further investigation for specific problems will be referred to the main campus at Hanumanthawaka Jn.
The Camera Culture Group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab, Boston, USA is collaborating with L V Prasad Eye Institute to quantify the refractive-error status of the eye using a low-cost cellphone device. NETRA (Sanskrit for 'eye' and acronym for The Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment) can diagnose refractive defects in two minutes, thus providing quick primary eye care in rural underserved areas. A snap-on plastic device is attached to the screen, with an array of plastic lenslets and the phone display is used to run tests and generate a prescription for myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. The device is cost-effective and easy to use. The refractive error can be estimated by the patient himself (with or without the aid of a technician) by aligning red-green patterns using a custom-designed user-interface. The stored data can be retrieved using standard data transfer procedures. Well-controlled scientific studies have confirmed that NETRA performs very closely to standard clinical procedures.

Eye screening for Special Olympic Athletes
LVPEI, Bhubaneswar participated in a screening camp organized by the Lions Eye Hospital for intellectually challenged athletes of the Special Olympics, from April 9-10, 2011. Five optometrists and rehabilitation specialists took part in the program, conducting eye examinations for 202 athletes. Fourteen patients were referred to the Institute for further treatment.
Visit of Zeiss team
A four-member team headed by Dr Rudolf von Buenau, Executive Vice President, Business Sectors and Innovation, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc, USA was on a goodwill tour and visited LVPEI Bhubaneswar on April 14, 2011. They met Dr Taraprasad Das, Director, Bhubaneswar campus and toured the Institute.

LVPEI and Sankara Nethralaya (SN), Chennai have embarked upon a joint educational activity — combined grand rounds and faculty lectures through live videoconferencing. Global leader lectures, orations, special lectures, CMEs and journal club presentations will be webcast live from LVPEI and SN. The first faculty lecture on 'Nystagmus — simplified' was delivered from SN on April 9, 2011. The key speakers were Dr Rashmin A Gandhi, Senior Consultant, Department of Neuro-ophthalmology and Dr Meenakshi S, Senior Consultant, Department Pediatric Ophthalmology.
