Diploma in Community Eye Health Course

LVPEI's International Centre for Advancement of Rural Eye Care (ICARE) offers a six-month Diploma in Community Eye Health between January and June every year. This course aims to extend the individual patient-based traditional clinical practice of ophthalmology to the assessment and facilitation of good eye health for the population as a whole.

The course curriculum includes: assessment of the eye care needs of the community and the population; designing and implementing eye care programmes; management and evaluation of the eye care programmes; development of courses in community eye health; advocacy for community eye health; influencing health policy and epidemiological research into visual impairment and primary eye diseases; as well as clinical trials and research in health services.

Over a four-year period 34 ophthalmologists, general physicians, senior paraprofessionals, programme and project managers and health administrators from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Germany, Namibia, East Timor, Indonesia and different parts of India have studied under this programme.
