Long Term Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology
(Program being conducted at Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam)
The program is targeted towards ophthalmologists who have completed their basic training, or are practicing, and need to upgrade their skills in all specialties. The course provides them with up-to-date skills to ensure that diagnosis, treatment and surgery are accurate and timely.
The three-year fellowship program in comprehensive ophthalmology comprises technical instruction in modern methods of eye care, extensive work experience and complete patient care. It prepares candidates for a professional career in comprehensive ophthalmology with the ability to manage an eye care centre independently.
The program aims to train ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and management of common diseases of the eye in the areas of clinical evaluation, use of various investigative procedures, medical treatment, surgical intervention and research. The clinical training involves fellows working in rotation through different subspecialties in the outpatient department. They will also be encouraged to evaluate patients' problems in detail, using logic and clinical data to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.
Duration: Three years
Session commences: January and July each year
Places available: Four in each session
Qualifications: MS / MD / DNB (Ophthalmology)
Selection: Through a written test and interview in November and May.
Application procedure: Applications must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae and testimonials from two referees.
Training Methodology
The training will be divided into three segments:
17 months at LVPEI
Training will begin with a two-month basic study at the LVP -Zeiss Education Centre to enable fellows to familiarize themselves with the basic methods of clinical examination and diagnostic equipment. This will be followed by rotation in various departments - one month for contact lens, one month in low vision, microbiology and pathology, three months each in cornea, retina, glaucoma with plastics and neuro-ophthalmology with paediatric ophthalmology, with one month in uvea. Fellows will also learn diagnostic and management skills, how to deal with patients confidently, and the importance of timely referral.
13 months at rural eye centres
For the next 13 months, the fellows will work at a rural eye care centre in the state of Andhra Pradesh. All these centres have trained eye care personnel, an administrator, and excellent facilities, where an ophthalmologist can examine 15,000 outpatients and perform 1,500 surgeries annually. Among the routine surgeries performed here are, cataract surgeries with intraocular lens implantation, glaucoma, naso-lacrimal duct obstruction, pterygium and plastic procedures for eyelids.
6 months at LVPEI
During this period, four days per week will be utilised in patient care; on the remaining two days fellows can develop their skills in any subspecialty.
