Long-term
Program/Fellowships
The first three months of the fellowship constitute a probation period during
which the fellows will learn basic examination techniques
in cornea, glaucoma and retina. Part of this period will
be spent at the LVP - Zeiss Academy where they will
also learn the relevant diagnostic procedures. The trainees'
performance is evaluated at the end of this period and the
fellowship may be terminated if the candidate is found unsuitable.
For the next 12 months the fellows work in rotation with
faculty members in the subspecialty of her/his choice, and
also in para-clinical departments like microbiology and
pathology to gain experience in diagnostic techniques. For the last nine months of the fellowship, the
fellows will work as Associates in the Institute in the respective
subspecialty, to gain on-the-job exposure.
During the course of the fellowship, there is ample opportunity
for fellows to handle general ophthalmic cases independently
and consult with the faculty of various subspecialties in
related ophthalmic diseases. This enables them to draw upon
the expertise of various specialists. They also have an
opportunity to perform surgeries independently, and follow
up on surgical cases.
Fellows are also required to review the medical records
of patients in the hospital and present a summary of the
case history.
Classes are held on all weekdays at the Institute. Fellows
are required to present case studies in the clinical grand
rounds, articles in the journal clubs and attend topical
seminars. Each fellow is assigned an academic advisor. Fellows
are also required to initiate and complete a minimum of
one prospective and one retrospective study during the program.
