Bausch
and Lomb School of Optometry
The American Academy of Optometry defines
the primary care optometrist as,
"A practitioner with ongoing responsibility for the total visual, ocular, and
related care of a population of patients. Primary care optometry is a focus of
practice activity that emphasises the development and maintenance of a high level
of knowledge and clinical ability over the entire area of eye/vision care and
associated areas of eye-related health care."
As eye care in India progresses - both in widening its reach across the nation
and in raising its standards to the highest levels - and new and more sophisticated
products are available on the market, there is an increasing demand for competent
optometrists, who can provide the best eye care for people with visual disabilities.
To fulfill this need the LVPEI Bausch and Lomb School of Optometry was established
to provide rigorous specialized training to students of optometry. The school
was established with the generous support of Bausch and Lomb, leaders in the eye
care industry. It offers a unique program as well as a remarkable career opportunity
for aspiring young students. The bachelor's degree in science is recognised
by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. This
is the first program in India to offer a multiple entry and exit option, i.e.,
it is designed to allow students to leave the program at different levels, to
enter the work arena. They can re-enter the program if they wish, after a period
of time, and continue the course, to acquire a four-year baccalaureate (bachelor
degree) in optometry. The B & L School of Optometry is located at
Kismatpur, a rapidly developing institutional area outside the city of Hyderabad.
The school, spread over an area of 15,000 square feet and situated on a 5-acre
campus, boasts of spacious classrooms with modern audio-visual facilities, well-equipped
laboratories, including a pre-clinic teaching laboratory and a well-equipped dispensing
laboratory, and information systems department.
