LVPEI's mission is to provide equitable and efficient eye care to all sections of society. The Institute charter aims at providing 50 percent of its services free of cost to the economically disadvantaged. Every patient receives the highest quality care, regardless of caste, creed, or ability to pay. Of the more than two million surgeries at the hospital, over 50 per cent are performed absolutely free of charge — by the same doctors, at the same operation theatres and with the same post-operative care, as paying patients receive.
In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), LVPEI has designed and implemented many innovative community eye health programs. Each day, 200 people who cannot afford eye care, receive care from some of the world’s best eye health professionals, while hundreds more benefit from LVPEI’s rural affiliates and satellite clinics in urban slums, all over the state of Andhra Pradesh.
LVPEI commenced its community eye care and outreach program in 1994 and has been setting up a network of satellite, partner and affiliate centers all across Andhra Pradesh, India. Teams of community eye health workers that include local volunteers conduct community and school screening programs. In addition to surgeries, the range of services provided includes prescription of spectacles, follow-up visits, referrals, training, and community rehabilitation.
Like all charitable institutions, L V Prasad Eye Institute depends on the support of many individuals and groups from different sectors and different walks of life. Our growth has to a large extent been possible because of such support, in the form of material, physical and intellectual contributions from many quarters. The fight against needless blindness — and the effort to rehabilitate and include people with severe, disabling vision problems — cannot succeed without such cooperation.
Your contribution towards supporting the LVPEI mission for the people of India could be utilized in several ways, such as eye care services for a non-paying patient, training deserving eye care professionals, researching eye disease treatment strategies, or setting up a new patient care facility at the Institute.
