Vision
Rehabilitation > How Rehabilitation Helps

The goal of vision rehabilitation is to help people with low
vision or blindness to live as independently as possible,
and develop their potential to become active members and
contributors to their communities.
In addition to learning how to use special devices to
perform a range of tasks, people with low vision also need
to learn new strategies to manage routine activities, by
coping with their specific disability. The approach to
rehabilitation is, therefore, highly individual and
personalized. The nature of the rehabilitation programme
depends on the severity of the disability, and when it
happened - in childhood, youth, maturity or old age.
Rehabilitation is not just about acquiring new functional
skills. It is also about living with confidence, and
developing the mental perspective and emotional strength
needed to employ the new skills to enhance the quality of
life. Rehabilitation is a combination of training,
orientation, and counselling, with an integrated programme
in view of the individual's context, needs, aspirations, and
support systems.
While vision rehabilitation cannot help someone to regain
sight, it can certainly help one to make the most of what
life has to offer.
