About IERG
The Indian Eye Research Group (IERG) consists of basic and clinical researchers working across all areas of eye research. The annual meeting provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and to promote knowledge sharing among eye researchers and is unique in drawing together participants from a wide range of specialties including biochemistry, structural biology, disease genetics, immunology, pathology, microbiology, cell biology, clinical ophthalmology, optometry and epidemiology.
The Annual Meeting
The meeting brings together those involved in different areas of basic and clinical eye research across the country. It has thus provided an opportunity for investigators in eye research to keep up with research in their field at the national level, and to build collaborations between institutions. These interactions in turn have the potential to lead to the identification of problems that call for an interdisciplinary approach, as well as those that have practical relevance in the realm of visual health/blindness both in the field and in the clinic.
The two-day meeting is divided in such a manner as to provide an equal emphasis on basic and translational research and clinical trials.
Areas of research covered during this meeting include:
- Biochemistry
- Cell biology
- Clinical ophthalmology
- Epidemiology
- Genetics
- Immunology
- Microbiology
- Optometry
- Pathology
- Structural biology
The meeting has largely been structured around short free paper presentations, invited keynote lectures, a special oration (the Bireswar Chakrabarti Memorial Oration) and posters. Young researchers and trainees are encouraged to participate in the meeting. A limited amount of support is available in the form of a small number of travel fellowships to pre-and post-doctoral level research fellows, as well as clinical fellows in ophthalmology.
The Bireswar Chakrabarti Memorial Oration
This memorial oration was instituted in 1998 in honour of Dr Bireswar Chakrabarti, a physical chemist who had a keen interest in eye research in India. This oration is held every year at the IERG meeting. It is given by invitees from within and outside India who have made significant contributions to eye research or to frontier areas of biology.
Invitees for this oration include:
- Dr Narsing Rao, Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California (1998)
- Dr H N Madhavan, Vision Research Foundation, Chennai (1999)
- Dr Gijs Vrensen, The Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2000)
- Dr Venkat N Reddy, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan (2001)
- Dr G Padmanabhan, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2002)
- Dr Partha P Majumder, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (2003)
- Dr D Balasubramanian, L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad (2004)
- Prof R Beuerman, Singapore Eye Research Institute, Singapore (2005)
- Prof Shomi Bhattacharya, Institute of Ophthalmology, London, UK (2006)
- Dr Samuel Zigler, Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medical Institute, Baltimore, USA (2007)
