Education Day

At the Academy of Eye Care Education's first consolidated Graduation Day, 29-30 November 2014 at HICC, 178 trainees had their convocation. They included all cadres: Ophthalmology, Optometry, Vision Technicians, Ophthalmic Nursing Assistants, Diploma in Eye Health Management (DEHM) and Diploma in Community Eye Health (DCEH). The Chief Guest was Sri Vikas Desai, a gold medalist from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, an active filmmaker and teacher. The Guest of

Honour was Padmashri A V Rama Rao, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Avra Laboratories Pvt Ltd. The event included ophthalmology and optometry alumni meetings and a scientific program.

   
World Diabetes Day

Across the Network: More than 8000 people participated in 50 events comprising diabetes awareness walks, rallies, meetings, community diabetic retinopathy screening programs, essay and painting competitions etc. The theme this year was 'Healthy Living with Diabetes'.

'Awareness Walk' at the Ramakrishna Beach on 9th November flagged off by Sri Uppalapati Raja, Titan Business Associate and Sri Krishnam Raju.

   

An education program at Ameya International School, Bheemunipatnam, on 14th November on 'The Eye and Eye Ailments' by Rekha Gunturu and Anand Kumar, Associate Optometrists.

Nutrition awareness talk by Dietician Mrs Neetha S Dilip on 14th November at the campus.

Community Screening on 11th November for DWACRA a self-help women's group, and on 19th November at Kancharapalem.

   
Eye-PEP 2014

Eye-PEP, the Post-graduate Education Program in Ophthalmology, 23-28 November 2014, provided a practical review of basic and clinical ophthalmology to 188 registered participants.

 
First Ever Surgical Workshop - Retinal Diseases in Children

A series of activities to bring public focus on ROP were organized to mark 15 years of the Indian Twin Cities Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening (ITCROPS) program. The first ever dedicated hands-on surgical workshop in India devoted to retinal diseases of newborns and children, 1-8 November 2014, had Dr Michael Trese, MD, Beaumont School of Medicine and Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan; Dr Lingam Gopal, Senior Consultant, Department of Ophthalmology, National University Hospital, Singapore; and Dr Subhadra Jalali, Associate Director and Head of Clinical Services, LVPEI Hyderabad. About 100 children with retinal problems were examined for expert opinion.

   
Dr C Syamala Bhaskaran Lecture

The 18th Dr C Syamala Bhaskaran Endowment Lecture on 5 November 2014 was on 'Blinding diseases in premature newborns: Management of ROP in the 21st century' by Dr Michael Trese, MD, Beaumont School of Medicine and Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan.

  • Awarded Dr Y Nayudamma memorial gold medal by the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences (APAS) at its Golden Jubilee Science Congress celebrations, November 13-15.
  • Invited as Associate Editor of Ophthalmic Research, a Journal for Translational and Clinical Research.

Javed Ali

  • Book 'Principles and Practice of Lacrimal Surgery' published by Springer, Germany released internationally - a comprehensive text dealing with the evaluation and management of lacrimal disorders; contains 40 chapters, 400 pages and 642 photographs.
  • Invited to the editorial board of the Journal 'Ophthalmic Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (OPRS)'.

Subhabrata Chakrabarti

  • Received ranking of “Exceptionally Good Review,” for manuscript sent to the Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science Editorial Board.
  • Invited member of Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) committee to lead the initial stage of their Global Eye and Vision Sciences Research Training Initiative.

Taraprasad Das honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACOIN) at their 5th Annual Conference in Kolkata, 31 October - 2 November 2014.

Ashik Mohamed delivered a seminar on 'The ageing human eye lens' on November 26 in the context of his research stay as an invited expert by Prof Susana Marcos, Director of the Visual Optics and Biophotonics Lab, Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas - CSIC), Madrid, Spain.


Ramayamma International Eye Bank (RIEB) awarded Quality Certification for compliance with the SightLife Partner Standards.


Sandeep Roy's photograph featured on the cover of the October issue of 'Eurotimes'. LVPEI's Photography Team is headed by SBN Chary.


Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry (BLSO) interns Hemanth Reddy and Syed Hafiz won the IVI Rolling Trophy for the best undergraduate student research project in India. SMARTstereo is a tablet PC based application for accurate measurements of depth perception of patients of various ages and various viewing distances.


 
 
Children's Day, November 14th

@Bhubaneswar campus: Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre had fun-filled activities such as singing, dancing, painting, drawing competitions, and some awareness talks too. Participants included children who were patients, their parents and about 30 students from an orphanage.

   

@Vijayawada campus: The 4th Children's Eye Care Week at the David Brown Children's Eye Care Centre had an interesting mix of events: parents' support group meet, workshop for special educators, group discussion on 'Inclusive Education', annual children's painting competition on 'Swacch Bharat' and a street play too.

   

@Hyderabad campus:The Jasti V Ramanamma Children's Eye Care Centre organized a drawing competition and presented gifts to participants.

   
Public Lecture on Guide Dogs

Mr Ian Cox, Chair, Development Committee, International Guide Dog Federation delivered a Public Lecture on 'Starting and Developing a Guide Dog Organization' on 4 November 2014. Guide dogs are popularly used in developed countries to assist vision impaired and blind people.

 
Workshop for OT Nurses and Technicians

A two day Workshop for OT Nurses and Technicians of Secondary Centres was held at the GPR ICARE Campus,

15-16 November 2014 by Dr Savitri Sharma and Dr Varsha Rathi, and videolinked to the Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar campuses. The faculty included Dr Annie Mathai, Dr Renuka, Dr Joveeta, Mr Siddharth Sen and Mr Hidayat Ali.

 
IAPB Meeting for SE Asia

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and its partners held a meeting to draw up an action plan to reduce Avoidable Blindness in South East Asia by 25% in 5 years. The meeting was a World Health Organization (WHO) Regional workshop. IAPB's Chief Executive Oofficer Mr Peter Ackland, IAPB South East Asia Regional Chair and Vice Chair LVPEI Dr Taraprasad Das, and Founder-Chair LVPEI Dr Gullapalli N Rao addressed the press.
