Rare Procedure, First in AP

After losing vision in both eyes, a 35-year-old man underwent a keratoprothesis to replace cornea in one eye and regain near normal vision. The surgery was conducted by Dr Jayesh Vazirani at the GMR Varalakshmi campus on 16 August. This was the first such surgery in Andhra Pradesh and the third in the country after Chennai and Hyderabad. It is an expensive one but was done fee of cost to the patient owing to his poor economic background.

Keratoprosthesis is a rare operation done to replace the damaged cornea with an artificial device. It is done in severe cases where the usual corneal transplantation is not expected to succeed. The widely used keratoprosthesis device called the Boston KPro has not had a good success rate with certain cases. To resolve this issue, doctors at LVPEI Hyderabad had recently innovated a small but significant design change in the device, now called LVP-KPro, which has been proven successful in patients with dry eye syndrome.
