My experience with L V Prasad Eye Institute, Visakhapatnam

After L V Prasad Eye Institute, Visakhapatnam, was established, I went there for an eye check-up in the month of October 2008. I had developed glaucoma by then. After an eye check-up by Dr PVKS Varma at LVPEI Vizag, I was advised to undergo laser treatment. I underwent the treatment at monthly, quarterly and half-yearly intervals, according to the pressure in my eyes.

From October 2008 till date, I have visited the hospital many times. The hospitality, cooperation and assistance given by the staff as well as by Dr Varma cannot be imagined, especially the practice of welcoming patients by saying Namaste. This is a worthy salutation. During my vast experience with the hospital, I felt that the staff were not working for their livelihood but for serving the patients. In one word, this institution is a VIP hospital for the poorest of the poor.

On 23 November 2012, I underwent surgery in my right eye. The performance of Dr Varma cannot be imagined. With his sweet words, he reassured me. The staff working under him, Mr Gopal and Ms Pushpa, also work with a service motive. LVPEI is not a hospital; it is a seva kendram for the poorest of the poor in society.

'Everything is like clockwork'

Hello Sam. Thank you so much for coordinating our encounter at the LVPEI once more. Both Kaveeta and I have discovered that our trust in your system, emanating out of our earlier visits, has not been unfounded at all. In fact, we are thankful that we took up the challenge to go for surgical correction. Partly because of your counselling, and mainly because of our complete trust in the abilities of Dr Pravin V Krishna and his team, once again I must say that the institution has continued to surpass our expectations. Be it in the patient's initial approach to the hospital or in going through the various tests and scans, everything is like clockwork. Please allow me to congratulate the institution on maintaining such stringent standards. Please send me the working model at LVPEI, for me to circulate it amongst my circle of friends.

Dear Team at LVPEI,
I have decided to contribute in whatever small way I can, to say THANK YOU to LVPEI on behalf of so many who will benefit from LVPEI's work. I have consulted some wonderful doctors and wish to donate a small amount in their name. Dr Subhadra is such a wonderful person and I was moved by her helping nature.

Respected Sir (Dr Sangwan),
My stay at LVPEI Hyderabad for a month has brought about a sea change in me. I am more confident now, and have fallen in love with the subject. My approach to a patient is much more organized; I feel there is so much to do to provide quality eye care to a patient. I am grateful to LVPEI for instilling discipline in me and my sincere gratitude to you for being my Guru and Mentor!

Thank you very much for the successful surgery and valuable medication for my baby Nusaiba Fatima. We are grateful to you and your team. Yesterday, after 22 days in India, I took my baby to Dr Tariq Reza at Islamia Eye Hospital, Dhaka, for an eye check-up, as per your suggestion. Apart from the medications and eye drops, we are trying to do light therapy, as per the advice of the rehab center, and making her use glasses. I need your valuable suggestions. Again, thank you for a fantastic job.

I visited this hospital as my vision was very hazy. At LVPEI, Dr Virendra (Sachdeva) is treating me. I had been to a Chennai hospital, where people frightened me about my eye condition. So I came back to this hospital. I am satisfied with the treatment as my vision improved a lot. I thank LVPEI, especially Dr Virendra.

Dr Sachdev diagnosed him with 'steroid dependant optic neuritis', a rare condition. He was treated and advised to come for frequent follow-ups. Now his problem has cleared and his vision has improved.

My son, Master Sudheendra Rajan, has undergone the basic computer program and also received mobility training from your esteemed organization, which is well known for its incredible services for the last 25 years. Since he is visually challenged, I was very worried about my son's job prospects, though he was a first class master's degree holder in MHRM. Because of the care and interest shown by you in this program, I was happy to see my son working with the computer very efficiently. I am grateful for your dedicated and sincere efforts for the betterment of needy and challenged persons like my son. "Service to humanity is service to God" — your organization is following this in letter and spirit.

Feedback on IT services

The LVP rehab has been very useful to me. The IT sessions for the past 3 months have been informative. Earlier I could use only 'MS Word' but now I can use e-mail also. Both the instructors helped us to understand things easily and helped us to learn new technology. The English class has improved our communication skills. These sessions also gave me new friends. I would have liked to continue but cannot because of my PG classes. Thank you! Hope you will start other such useful courses in future.

Experiences with LVPEI rehabilitation centre

Dear madam Hema,
I have successfully completed my basic course in computer training at LVP rehab centre. The centre occupies a special place in my life. The IT services provided here help make the visually challenged students experts in IT, which is essential for them to excel in the corporate sector. This noble service extended by LVPEI is highly appreciable. I am thankful for the opportunity given to me. The faculty is working relentlessly to make students perfect in computers. Sai sir and Siva sir are doing a remarkable job in imparting computer knowledge to new entrants to the subject. They assess the standard of the student and teach accordingly. Now I am confident of learning the C language as well.

The English classes were of great help in improving my grammar and communication skills. People come from different parts of India to do this course, but we jelled together as one unit. Sai sir always kept the competitive spirit up between us. I made many new friends and had a memorable time.

With the support of the LVPEI rehab center, we can not only stand up to the competition but also succeed in every field. The rehab team is taking special care to help patients manage their home affairs and build their careers. I thank Beula madam and each member of the rehab team for organizing such a wonderful program.

Words fail me in adequately expressing my opinion on the premier institute, viz, L V Prasad Eye Institute, GMR Varalakshmi Campus, Visakhapatnam. The eminent team of specialist doctors and surgeons stands second to none. The supporting staff, across all ranks, are affectionate, courteous, large-hearted and dedicated (that) made me feel as it is my second home. The green lush landscaped gardens are par excellence and add to the therapeutic charm of the renowned institution.

With all benevolence and gratitude I pray to God that in no time it would grow to be recognized as an A1 institute for the restoration of sight to many.

May 29, 2012  -    From Vijayawada campus

Thank you so much for checking all our HIV positive Tulip Garden orphan children and 40 handicapped orphans from Asha Jyothi. This is a very great help for us!

I was so surprised when I arrived at the L V Prasad Eye Institute and The David Brown Children's Eye Care Centre. It is so clean, so well organised, and everybody was so very kind to us and our children. What a great difference from so many other hospitals here in Vijayawada and the many hospitals I have seen in all my years in India. I felt I was in a hospital back in The Netherlands.......my compliments! Even our children were surprised to see a hospital like this — so beautiful and clean, with kind and friendly doctors!

May 23, 2012 - I congratulate you for having such good staff members

I happened to visit your hospital at Banjara Hills, along with a relative. Your staffer Vanita Ganesh (Associate Administrator) is one of the best in terms of her behavior and helpful nature to the patients. The way she interacts with patients and their attenders is highly appreciable. I congratulate you for having such good staff members.

April 21, 2012 - Thank you for the wonderful job your team did

Thank you for the wonderful job your team did on 18-4-2012 for my OD cataract surgery. I was so tense, but the assurance given by Dr Somasheila Murthy helped me opt for local anesthesia, instead of general. The doctor not only saved the unnecessary expenditure of general anesthesia, but saved me and my wife from a lot of anxiety and tension.

Any institute or organization runs on the efforts of dedicated individuals. Dedicated doctors like Somasheila are a great asset to any institute. I would like to see her in this prestigious institute for a long time. I thank her and her wonderful team. I may not see her again, but one's relations should be like what a great philosopher said, "Do you know the relationship between two EYES? They blink together, they move together, they cry together, even though they never see each other."

Pulizala Raghavender, Hyderabad

PS: We have been involved in donating eyes since 1979. Recently, on April 17, we donated the eyes of my aunt Pulizala Shakuntala Bai to LVPEI. So far we have donated 17 persons' eyes, through our circle of friends and relatives.

March 6, 2012 - Thanksgiving to Dr G Chandra Sekhar

was on a visit to Hyderabad in January this year and was very fortunate that I had the privilege of being examined by Dr Chandra Sekhar who gave a lot of time and the fullest attention to me, despite his heavy schedule. It was a very satisfying experience. Even his team is dedicated and thorough in their work. As I am a resident of Delhi I requested for the medical reports, which were sent to me very promptly. The reports were seen by my Delhi specialist who put me on treatment, as advised by Dr Chandra Sekhar. I was very impressed with the functioning of this great eye Institute, headed by such a reputed doctor like Dr Chandra Sekhar.

My sincerest thanks and best regards to him

February 21, 2012 - My experience in Hyderabad

In February 2010, my doctor told me that the problems in my right eye were not due to the rejection of a corneal transplant performed in 1985, as previously thought. In fact the lifespan of the cornea had come to an end. Very soon after, I could not see with that eye. It took some adjusting to adapt to one-sided vision. I could not accept it. When I discussed with my doctor about the possibility of a transplant, she said there was a very long waiting list.

I phoned my niece in London and both she and her husband (they are from Mumbai) suggested I go to India for the operation. I contacted my doctor in Zimbabwe (I emigrated to South Africa in 2006) and he said a patient of his had just returned from Hyderabad with wonderful results after a corneal transplant. I contacted him the same day and he very generously gave me all the details that I needed to make my arrangements. For me it was a done thing —I followed his information and suggestions implicitly. There was never any doubt or fear or apprehension. He told me of the wonderful people who made up the hospital and how they took care of him. And he was so happy with the successful operation he had just had.

(At LVPEI) I was received with courtesy and every person who took me from one doctor to the next was so friendly and polite. This was on Friday. One lady doctor who checked my blood pressure was so concerned when she found it to be high. My big day was Tuesday, 26th October 2010. I was prepared in the outer room. I was given an anaesthetic injection in the eye. This was the only painful bit. I was walked to the theatre, put on the bed, just barely felt the surgeon's hands and before I knew it, I was back in the outer room. All this in 30 minutes!

I needed to take painkillers for a few days only and I was seen twice in the following week. By the time I returned to Mumbai on the 14th day, you could not say that I had just had an eye operation, except of course for the dark glasses.

Everybody, from the Administrator Mr Sam, to the doctor, Dr Somasheila Murthy and her team and even the clerks and assistants, were just wonderful. I have no other word to describe them! And of course, the food in the canteen! We just loved it.

Everything was so affordable and although there were so many patients, everyone was treated with respect. On my return to South Africa, my doctor was amazed with the successful operation and all the information I gave her. She found your annual report very informative and impressive. By God's grace, I am enjoying good sight and I am improving all the time. I wish I could take every person who needs sight to Hyderabad. I would take them all to Dr Somasheila Murthy. Thank you Dr Murthy and may the Lord bless you and all the wonderful people who make up your Institute!

I had undergone a cataract operation in my left eye in 2009 at Bokaro General Hospital. Immediately after the operation I told the doctor that a double image was forming all the time in front of my left eye. The doctor said nothing could be done. Meanwhile, my right eye had developed a cataract. On a friend’s advice I came to LVPEI on 3rd October. I was operated upon by Dr Bhupesh Bagga and his team. Dr Bagga also operated on my left eye. I express my sincere gratitude to them because they have given me new vision … I can see clearly and my old problem has been cured.

Dear Dr Kekunnaya,

When you told me that Aditya is now completely cured from squint, for the first time in my life I felt what true happiness is. It seems the feeling is even more so than when Aditya was born! All thanks to you! You of course have said it is all God's wish but it is also true that He gifted you the skills to complete and complement God's own creation — which you so humbly do each day of your life. All of your patients must be so thankful to have benefited by your work! I am sure Aditya will also appreciate it when he comes of age and realizes how you have changed and gifted him his life back.

I had mailed you in December 2010 regarding my son Tarun (name changed). My son has tuberous sclerosis and related vision issues. We are heavily indebted to doctors and rehabilitation therapists at your hospital. Our son was being seen by Dr Niranjan Pehere for quite some time. We learnt that he had shifted to your new facility at Vijayawada. Since both Hyderabad and Vijayawada are equidistant for us and since he had been extremely sincere and understanding, we decided to go to Vijayawada.

Dr Niranjan is one of the best doctors with you! I am telling you with full confidence and experience, being a doctor myself. He is all ears to every minute problem that we narrate, whether it is related to his specialty or not. He heard everything, made mental notes, and gave us typed suggestions as notes! This was awesome because we did not see any pen or paper anywhere near him when we discussed our son's problems, but he made notes and prepared suggestions for each of them, typed them and gave us a print!! It was a miracle! I am yet to meet such a dedicated, learned, as well as, patient doctor in my life.

He also took care of small issues like our food, our stay and even conveyance to reach the hospital! Who cares or bothers about anybody so much nowadays?

Our son is doing great! He has some vision related issues, which we are sure will be solved to the extent possible, under the care of doctors like Dr Niranjan. This young and learned doctor needs to be appreciated by one and all.

Dear Sir (Dr Sangwan),

The way I was received, seen & reviewed at LVPEI was something I experienced for the first time in my 59 years. I find no words to express my feelings…the word ‘thanks’ is insufficient to express what I mean. I saw your untiring endeavors for all the patients visiting LVPEI, which is a milestone for others to follow. Your efforts & initiative will take this institute to a position above all.

My son Noman got the deadliest parasites (acanthamoeba keratitis) and, worse, there was no treatment available in UAE. We got to know that in Asia, it’s only treated in LVPEI and fortunately we are originally from Hyderabad. I could not have imagined the treatment that is extended in LVPEI. My first meeting with Dr Muralidhar had taken away all my fears and worries. Seeing the man I knew he is the doctor who can heal my son. Dr Muralidhar is not only a very good doctor, but he is a GEM of a person. I have no words to thank him. I wish there is one Dr Muralidhar in all the hospitals all over the world. God bless him.

The grand scale of LVPEI's work is such that it can be easy to look from the outside and not truly consider the impact that your endeavours have on each individual. The story from LVPEI's rehabilitation group is certainly a timely reminder of how important each person is within your institute.

Indeed, the progress you continue to make throughout your eye care pyramid is remarkable - from the community work to the honours received by your scientists and clinicians, LVPEI is as always a shinig example to healthcare organisations of any kind.

As we enter into 2011 we at the Champalimaud Foundation are proud to be associated with you and your team at LVPEI and I wish you a very happy holiday season and another successful and productive year.
