EMPI - Indian Express Indian Innovation Awards 2006
The Honorable Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, gave away the EMPI-Indian Express Indian Innovation Awards 2006 at a glittering ceremony on December 22, 2007, at the Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. Dr Gullapalli N Rao, Chairman, LVPEI, received the spectacular Gold Trophy for and on behalf of L V Prasad Eye Institute. The citation read "In recognition of the institution's innovative approach to providing a sustainable, comprehensive rehabilitation and community health eye-care to communities in remote as well as in urban areas. The system covers primary eye care through trained local 'vision guardians' and 'vision centres' in remote areas, networked for advanced tertiary care, to a world class cutting edge research eye care centre of excellence."
The eight other organizations who won gold trophies in various fields of industry and enterprise included Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Genpact, and Multi Commodity Exchange of India. Five organizations received silver trophies.
The presentation ceremony was followed by a panel discussion, 'Innovative Journeys'. Moderated by Mr Arun Maira, Chairman, Boston Consulting Group, USA, the session brought out insights and key issues of the winning organizations' innovations, the challenges they faced in implementation and their social and business impact. The Durbar Hall at the Taj Palace was packed to capacity for the event. With captains of industry, bureaucrats, and media personnel. The entire event was web-cast.
