Milestones

  • The Vision Rehabilitation Centres at Kallam Anji Reddy campus, Hyderabad have seen 100,000 clients between June 4, 1992 and December 24, 2011. 
  • Preeji Sudharman completed her Master’s degree in Optometry and Vision Science from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Now she wants to do a PhD!
  • The Kode Venkatadri Chowdary (KVC) campus, Vijayawada saw 25,000 outpatients till December 26, 2011. 
  • The David Brown Children’s Eye Care Centre at KVC campus crossed the 2000 new children milestone on December 7, 2011. 
  • The GMR Varalakshmi campus crossed the 50 surgeries mark on December 8, 2011.
  • Madhapur City Centre, Hyderabad performed 20 surgeries on December 6, 2011. 

Graduation day

The graduation ceremony of the 3rd batch of Master’s in Community Eye Health (MCEH), 11th batch of Diploma in Community Eye Health (DCEH) and 6th batch of the Program Management and Evaluation programs was held on December 17, 2011. Dr M Mohan Rao, Additional Director, Medical Education, Dr G Chandra Sekhar, Director, LVPEI, Hyderabad and Dr Prashant Garg, Head, MVT Center for Eye Care Education, LVPEI presented certificates to the outgoing students. Dr Mohan Rao, Dr R Pararajasegaram from Geneva (recorded message), Dr Geeta K Vemuganti from Central University, Hyderabad, Dr G V S Murthy, Director, Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad, and Dr Catherine Suttle from UNSW, Sydney (recorded message) delivered graduation messages on the occasion.

Seven long-term fellows also graduated the same day, including the first one from Bhubaneswar campus. The program began with the faculty re-introducing the fellows in a light-hearted fashion, taking us down memory lane. Chief guest Prof Deborah Sweeney from Vision CRC, Australia shared her experiences with the outgoing fellows. Master of ceremony Javed Ali conducted the program with style.

News from Bhubaneswar campus

Ms Esther Hyman, Trustee, Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust (MHMT), UK along with Mr Adrian White, Mrs Kathy and Mr Dave Batten, Board Members, MHMT visited the Miriam Hyman Children’s Eye Care Centre at Bhubaneswar campus from December 2-25, 2011. They reviewed the centre’s progress and filmed various activities in and outside the campus to make a documentary film. Imbibing captured the culture of Odisha, they spread the message of love and peace to all.

Partners Meet

The XII Partners & Village Vision Complex Vision Health Team Meet was held at the Kismatpur campus on December 17, 2011, with a universal pledge to make all villages blindness free. About 70 representatives from our partner centres and Village Vision Complexes participated, including administrators, Vision Centre coordinators, community eye care program supervisors and vision health organizers, vision health guardians, as well as consultants, public health specialists, program specialists, executives, directors of ICARE and the Chairman of LVPEI.

Eye donation campaign in Adilabad

On the occasion of their 20th anniversary, ViVimed Labs Limited, Hyderabad sought the technical support of Ramayamma International Eye Bank (RIEB) to conduct an eye donation awareness campaign in Adilabad district on December 27, 2011 – the first of its kind in a semi-urban set-up. Posters and banners on eye donation were displayed at prominent places in the city, inviting people to participate. The campaign started with a rally, with schoolchildren, nursing staff from Primary Health Centres (PHC) and doctors from the local IMA, as well as members of the public participating. A meeting was organized to create awareness about eye donation, the role of eye banks and how eye donation can help restore vision to the corneally blind. District Collector Dr Ashok Kumar presided and urged the public to pledge their eyes and work for the cause of eye donation. More than 200 people attended the program.

APVRS Congress a grand success

LVPEI successfully hosted the VI Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society (APVRS) Congress, in conjunction with the XX Annual Conference of the Vitreo Retinal Society – India from December 1-3, 2011. Fun camp for visually impaired children

Our GMR Varalakshmi campus organised its first "Fun Camp for Visually Impaired Children" on December 4, 2011 at Mudasarlova Park in Visakhapatnam. Over 20 children with visual impairment and an equal number of siblings, family members, staff and volunteers enjoyed the experience. Several games and competitions were organized in an adaptive way, such as frog race, tug of war, singing, passing the ball, throw ball, quiz, musical chairs, lemon and spoon race, considering the special needs of children, helping them to learn new skills. All the children received special prizes and gifts. Several consultants, friends, volunteers and trainees visited the camp and encouraged the children.

Good Health Show at Vizag campus

LVPEI’s GMR Varalakshmi campus, Visakhapatnam participated in the ‘Eenadu Good Health Show’ at Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium on December 3-4, 2011, as part of its public health initiative. A stall was put up, showcasing optical and non-optical devices and patient education brochures to create awareness of eye health among the public. An eye screening facility was set up in a nearby room, where 270 persons were screened. Around 800 people visited the stall and appreciated the Institute’s efforts in eliminating avoidable blindness.

EMR system reaches primary care centres

The Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system has reached the base of the LVPEI Eye Health Pyramid, with the launch of EMR services at the Manuguru Vision Centre on November 26, 2011. The primary care centre is now linked online to the secondary care Nava Bharat Eye Centre at Paloncha. Patients at Manuguru can be referred to Paloncha seamlessly using EMR and their case sheets will be available at both the places. Patients will continue to receive printed medical reports. The task was challenging, but accomplished with innovative developments. Over the next few months, the other 9 Vision Centres, affiliated to the Paloncha Service Centre will implement EMR in a phased manner, thus making this entire Vision Centre Complex online.

National Disability Awareness campaign

The ‘Badhte Kadam National Disability Awareness 2011 campaign’ was launched by the National Trust (Odisha Chapter) for the welfare of persons with autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities at LVPEI, Bhubaneswar on November 3, 2011. Shri Prafulla Samal, Minister for Woman & Child Development, Government of Odisha inaugurated the day-long grogram, which was attended by over a 100 people from various organizations, NGOs, parents of special children and members of the press. The event was organised by the Open Learning Systems (OLS) as the state nodal agency of the Trust.
