CME on pediatric ophthalmology |

LVPEI’s Kode Venkatadri Chowdary campus in Tadigadapa, Vijayawada conducted a CME on ‘Pediatric Ophthalmology for Pediatricians’ to mark the first anniversary of The David Brown Children’s Eye Care Centre on January 29, 2012. The CME aimed at sensitizing pediatricians to their potential for early identification of vision related problems in children and equip them with the necessary information and skills to fulfill that role. The delegates included Dr Mallikarjuna Rao, President and Dr Madhavi Majeti, Secretary of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Krishna district, Mr Kode Suresh, GM, Spectra Food Industries, Vijayawada, and 30 pediatricians from the city and surrounding areas. Dr Mallikarjuna Rao observed, "This is the first time I am attending such a symposium conducted by ophthalmologists for pediatricians. It’s a great beginning and I am sure it will go a long way." The speakers gave simple tips for day-to-day use in a busy practice. The audience participated actively in the discussions on various topics. An essay competition was organised for pediatrics postgraduates to sensitize them early in their career to their role in the early detection of eye problems among children. The topic was “Top 10 ophthalmic diagnosis that a pediatrician should not miss”. The first prize winner Dr Sandeep Pilli from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam won a pocket direct ophthalmoscope to encourage red reflex test and fundus examination. Runners-up Dr N Madhuri and Dr C Anusha Deepthi from ASRAM Medical College, Eluru also received prizes. Dr Sudrashini, HOD Pediatrics, ASRAM Medical College said, "An essay competition for pediatric postgraduates is an excellent way to encourage them to learn about eyes. I encouraged all my residents to participate in the competition and also to attend the CME". International award for eyeSmart EMR |
| LVPEI’s Electronic Medical Records system "eyeSmart EMR - Intelligent IT Solution for Eyecare" won third prize at the IT @ Networking Awards 2012 on January 21, 2012. The European Association of Healthcare IT Managers and the European Association of Hospital Managers (EAHM) organised the competition to recognise innovators in healthcare IT and medical technology at the General Secretariat of the EAHM in Clinique St. Jean, Brussels, Belgium. The eight finalists received IT @ 2012 finalist trophies and a certificate. The award recognises innovators of healthcare IT who have designed and implemented new solutions. |

GIVE ME A HAND — An art project for LVPEI |

More than 100 people — staff and curious patients — participated in an art initiative, GIVE ME A HAND on Wednesday, 18th January. Pots of paints and newspapers in Hindi, Telugu, Urdu and English were spread out on long tables in the gardens of LVPEI and everyone was invited to make handprints on the papers. Children and adult patients, clients attending rehabilitation sessions, nurses, staff from the cafeteria, medical records, maintenance and audiovisual departments, fellows, optometrists, consultants, technicians and counselors enjoyed participating in the art project. The event was led by Dr Chiara Morini, a short-term fellow in pediatrics at LVPEI from Piacenza, Italy and coordinated by noted artist Mr Surya Prakash, artist-in-residence at LVPEI. The newspapers with “hands of LVPEI” will be taken to Italy by Chiara, where her grandfather Carlo Riccardi, a well known artist from Rome will paint on them and exhibit them to raise funds for LVPEI. Chiara says, “Art is an important way of expression and can be an important experience for blind people.” Giving her a hand were 3 international volunteers at LVPEI, who plan to organize exhibitions in their countries for the benefit of LVPEI: Alexandra from Calgary (Canada),Louise from Edinburgh (Scotland), and Emma from Birmingham (UK). |

Foundation Day celebrations |
| LVPEI Bhubaneswar campus celebrated its seventh Foundation Day on January 16, 2012. On the occasion an elocution competition on “Why I like LVPEI” was conducted among employees. In the evening, all the staff participated in a cultural program and prizes were distributed to the winners of the various sports activities conducted earlier. |

Eye pledge program |
| LVPEI conducted an eye pledge program for Arena Animation; banners and posters were displayed prominently at the venue. A presentation by LVPEI highlighted the importance of eye donation, roadblocks faced by institutions like ours in securing corneas to help the needlessly blind and dispelling of myths about eye donation. Over 100 people attended the program and 31 pledged their eyes, while many promised to consult their families and register online later. The exercise helped create awareness about eye pledging and donation and the need for everyone to come forward to help bridge the gap between the demand and supply of corneas. |

Goodwill visit by Dr APJ Kalam |
| Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India visited LVPEI Bhubaneswar on January 4, 2012 and interacted with the staff and the faculty. Dr Taraprasad Das, Director, briefed him about the progress of the institute. Dr Kalam asked what were the 10 most challenging and intriguing cases managed by the institute. The faculty illustrated such cases and Dr Kalam was pleased to learn of the Institute’s excellence and commitment in eye care. He asked everyone to forge ahead with research work so that LVPEI Bhubaneswar would stand out as a unique institute in Eastern India. |

3 new Vision Centres for Vizag |
|
Three new Vision Centers (VCs) were inaugurated on December 29, 2011, taking the total number of LVPEI”s primary care centres to 86. The VCs are linked to L V Prasad Eye Institute’s GMR Varalakshmi Campus at Visakhapatnam and are the first of the 30 proposed VCs to be launched during 2013-2014, with the support of the Lavelle Fund for the Blind, Inc., USA. Kothavalasa Major donors: Sri T A N Gupta, Sri T V Ramanaiah Inaugurated by Dr D G K Raju, retired Medical Officer; also present: Dr Gorgi Devi, Ophthalmic Surgeon and Medical Officer of Viyyampeta PHC, Sri Rajanna, Special Officer and elders of the community. Dr Raju assured that he would give the clearance for all non-paying surgical patients so that the services are optimally utilized and the number of surgeries due to delayed detection of diabetes and hypertension is reduced. A total of 45 patients were screened on the first day. K Kotapadu Major donor: Sanghamithra Rural Development Society represented by Dr Ramachandra Rao, ENT civil surgeon, Sri Mangapathi Rao and their team. It was inaugurated by Sri O Naresh, CEO, Symbiosis Technologies and one of Vizag campus’ first donors. He assured all help in raising funds for the glucometers, electronic BP apparatus and weighing machines required for the VC. Dr Avinash Pathengay delivered a talk on preventive eye care, diabetic retinopathy and optimum utilization of the Vision Centre’s services. Dr Thirupaiah, retired Civil Surgeon, assured that all clearances would be given for non-paying surgical patients. Forty people were screened on the first day. Kasimkota Major donors: Visakha Dairy, represented and inaugurated by its Director Sri Ramana Rao, with support from Sri Malla Bulli Babu, former Sarpanch, Sri Pala Ramana, Sri Musali Naidu and other community members. Sri Ramana Rao spoke of the services offered by LVPEI to the local community. A highlight of this centre is that the building houses several centres offering services for pregnant women, adult education, and training in tailoring and fashion technology. Thirty patients were screened on the first day. |

Graduation day |
| The graduation ceremony of the 3rd batch of Master’s in Community Eye Health (MCEH), 11th batch of Diploma in Community Eye Health (DCEH) and 6th batch of the Program Management and Evaluation programs was held on December 17, 2011. Dr M Mohan Rao, Additional Director, Medical Education, Dr G Chandra Sekhar, Director, LVPEI, Hyderabad and Dr Prashant Garg, Head, MVT Center for Eye Care Education, LVPEI presented certificates to the outgoing students. Dr Mohan Rao, Dr R Pararajasegaram from Geneva (recorded message), Dr Geeta K Vemuganti from Central University, Hyderabad, Dr G V S Murthy, Director, Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad, and Dr Catherine Suttle from UNSW, Sydney (recorded message) delivered graduation messages on the occasion. Seven long-term fellows also graduated the same day, including the first one from Bhubaneswar campus. The program began with the faculty re-introducing the fellows in a light-hearted fashion, taking us down memory lane. Chief guest Prof Deborah Sweeney from Vision CRC, Australia shared her experiences with the outgoing fellows. Master of ceremony Javed Ali conducted the program with style. |

| Ms Esther Hyman, Trustee, Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust (MHMT), UK along with Mr Adrian White, Mrs Kathy and Mr Dave Batten, Board Members, MHMT visited the Miriam Hyman Children’s Eye Care Centre at Bhubaneswar campus from December 2-25, 2011. They reviewed the centre’s progress and filmed various activities in and outside the campus to make a documentary film. Imbibing captured the culture of Odisha, they spread the message of love and peace to all. |
