Former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated the secondary care OCL Eye Centre at Rajgangpur in Odisha on 27 February 2015 in the presence of Shri Mangala Kisan, Member of Legislative Assembly, Odisha. Also present was Ms. Kanupriya Dalmia, Assistant Vice President, OCL India Limited.

Champalimaud Research Symposium

The Eighth Annual Champalimaud Research Symposium concluded on 1 February 2015 with notable presentations by Madame Leonor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation, Portugal; the Champalimaud Lecture by Prof Shigeru Kinoshita, Kyoto Prefecture University of Medicine, Japan; Prof Sheila McNeil, and Prof Stephen Rimmer, University of Sheffield, UK; Prof Adrian

Glasser, University of Houston, USA; Prof K Vijay Raghavan and Prof Manju Sharma, Department of Biotechnology, India; and Prof Denise DeFreitas, Paulista School of Medicine, Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil.

Upcoming Institutes

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 12th February 2015 with Operation Eyesight Universal, Canada to establish the Operation Eyesight Institute for Eye Cancer.


Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Sri N Chandrababu Naidu handed over a cheque for Rs 1.5 crore from Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals on 23 February as part of their grant for the Aurobindo Geriatric Eye Centre (AGE) to come up at the GMR Varalakshmi Campus.

Eye Care for Hudhud Victims

In a unique initiative for the disadvantaged communities of the Visakhapatnam coast hit by Cyclone Hudhud on 12 October 2014, the Australian Consulate General in Chennai will provide replacement glasses and LVPEI will facilitate free vision screening at their GMR Varalakshmi campus. The initiative will be implemented by India Vision Institute (IVI).

Nawab Arastu Yar Jung Lecture

Prof. Adrian Glasser, Benedict-Pitts Professor, Optometry and Vision Sciences and Biomedical Engineering, University of Houston, delivered the Nawab Arastu Yar Jung Bahadur Memorial Lecture on 4 February 2015 on ‘How the young eye can focus at near and why this fails as we get older’.

First Ever 3D Oculoplasty Show

The Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery service won applause at the Annual Conference of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) on 5 February 2015 in New Delhi for the first ever 3D Oculoplasty Show.

MoU with Special Olympics Bharat

LVPEI signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Special Olympics Bharat for quality vision care of aspirants to the Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes program.

Eye Movement Recording System

Eye Movement Recoding System - for patients with Nystagmus - was installed at the Jasti V Ramanamma Children’s Eye Care Centre with funding support from Cognizant Foundation.


Awards & Honours

Dr Taraprasad Dasdelivered the Adenwala Oration at the 73rd All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) meeting, 5-8 February 2015, New Delhi.

Dr Prashant Garg won the MRC (Medical Research Council) and Department of Biotechnology (DBT)’s ‘Centre Partnership Grants’ for pre-existing research collaborations between UK and India.

At the 18th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, AP Chapter (IAMM APCON 2015), 7-8 February 2015, Khammam:

  • Dr Savitri Sharma won the Dr K Rajyalakshmi Memorial award for ‘The rigour and relevance of research in eye infections: an account of 28 years’
  • Dr Joveeta Joseph won the Dr CS Bhaskaran gold medal for Junior Best Paper for ‘Corynebacterium spp. endophthalmitis: Clinico-microbiologic profile and outcomes’

At the International Symposium on ‘Genomics in Health and Diseases’ & 40th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Human Genetics (ISHG), 28-30 January 2015, Mumbai:

  • Dr Inderjeet Kaur was elected Treasurer, ISHG
  • Dr Subhabrata Chakrabarti was re-elected to the Executive Council of ISHG
  • Sonika Rathi won the Young Scientist award for ongoing research on ‘Biomarker Identification for Retinopathy of Prematurity’

At the photography exhibit for the forthcoming American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA) Annual Symposium and Congress, 21-27 April 2015, San Diego:

  • SBN Chary won the 1st prize and 3 honourable mentions
  • Naresh Gattu won the 2nd prize and an honourable mention

Dr Subhadra Jalali was invited as specialist for the January 2015 Silver Jubilee issue of Delhi Journal of Ophthalmology that published an ‘Ophthalmic Deliberation’ section on ROP.

Ashik Mohamed won the 1st prize at the student photo competition, School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, for ‘Minishadowgraphy images of isolated human donor lenses’.

Dr Taraprasad Das’s book ‘Flights of a Bumblebee: A Journey in Compassionate Eye Care’ was released by Dr Abdul Kalam during the inaugural of the OCL Eye Centre at Rajgangpur, 27 February.

Hyderabad4Innovation (H4I), a group including LVPEI’s Srujana Centre for Innovation; Directors of IIT, IIIT, BITS and ISB; Presidents of TiE& HYSEA; and industry leaders such as BVR Mohan Reddy, Srini Raju, JA Chowdary and others launched their ‘Hyderabad4Innovation’ directory of 100 ecosystem support resources.

Workshop: Ocular Surface Disorders

The annual Workshop on Ocular Surface

Disorders (OSW), 29-31 January 2015, supported by the Champalimaud Foundation, had over 40 participants including Professor James Chodosh, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, USA; Professor Guillermo Amescua, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, USA; Dr Ahmed Gomaa, Orbis (The Flying Eye Hospital) and Professor Namrata Sharma, R P Center of Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi.

EnVision 2015 Workshop

The Srujana Centre for Innovation hosted the inaugural EnVision 2015 workshop, 2-6 February 2015, aimed at providing bio-engineering skills to optometry and vision science staff and faculty at LVPEI. Prof Adrian Glasser, University of Houston College of Optometry and Dr Shrikant Bharadwaj, LVPEI were the faculty.
