LVPEI Bhubaneswar’s 10th Anniversary

The 3rd invitational lecture of the public lecture series at LVPEI Bhubaneswar had
Dr Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi, an exponent in Odissi and Padmashree awardee for her contribution to Science and Technology, speak on “The Art of Science and the Science of Art” on 4 June 2015, the 10th anniversary of the LVPEI Bhubaneswar campus.

 
New Vision Centres

Three new Vision Centres were inaugurated in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh on June 2015, supported by Latter-day Saint Charities, USA. Dr Isac Ferguson and
Mr Dean Walker from LDS Charities launched the centres.

CME: Crusade Against Diabetic Blindness

A CME titled “Crusade against diabetic blindness” was conducted on 24 May 2015 at LVPEI Bhubaneswar under the aegis of the Odisha State Ophthalmic Society. The event was supported by a grant from the All India Ophthalmic Society’s Academic and Research Committee, with Dr Umesh Chandra Behera being chosen one of ten surgeons in India to hold such academic programs to prevent blindness related to Diabetic Retinopathy.

 
 

Awards & Honours

Shrikant Bharadwaj invited to serve as an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, a journal from Nature Publishing Group, the publishers of Nature.

At the 6th World Glaucoma Congress, 6-9 June 2015 in Hong Kong:

  • Sirisha Senthil and Isha Gulati won 1st prize for the video ‘Management of a Giant Overhanging Bleb’.
  • Anil K Mandal won 2nd prize for his video ‘Exploration of Schlemm’s Canal & Primary Combined Trabeculotomy-Trabeculectomy (CTT) for Developmental Glaucoma:
    A 20 Year Experience’.

Subhabrata Chakrabarti invited by Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong for their Academic Visitor Program, June 4-10, 2015.

Subhadra Jalali awarded Vocational Excellence Award for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) by:

  • Rotary Club of Hyderabad Megacity at their Silver Jubilee celebrations, 20 June 2015. Annapurna Bhaskari Foundation and Rotary Club of Hyderabad Megacity donated a Digital Video indirect Ophthalmoscope to help upgrade work for preventing ROP blindness.
  • Rotary International District 3150 for ROP work across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, June 28, 2015 at Bhadrachalam during their annual awards.

At the 1st Telangana State Ophthalmological Society (TSOS) Annual Conference at Karimnagar, 20-21 June 2015:

  • Swathi Kaliki won the Manoj Mathur Best Poster award for ‘Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia (OSSN) as the presenting feature of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection’.
  • Vivek Dave won the Swarup Best Video award for ‘ILM Peeling in a rare case of Terson syndrome’.
  • Jagadesh Reddy was runner-up in the poster session
  • Tarjani Dave was the runner-up in the video session
  • Subhadra Jalali was awarded the Rustam Ranji Oration for ‘Seventeen years of ROP: The journey so far and the way forward in Telangana’

Jay Chhablani achieved 100 publications on Pubmed, 31 of them as first author, 25 as first and corresponding author, and over 70 articles in his field of interest - macular diseases, especially Choroidal Imaging.

 
 
One month old baby regains sight

One month old baby Subham’s parents had brought him to LVPEI Bhubaneswar after noticing a whitening of his eyes.
Dr Aparna Rao had performed Trabeculectomy surgery on the tiny baby. The child is now two years old, has regained vision and is doing well with the aid of spectacles, much to the relief of his grateful parents.

 
Durga Scores 9.2 in Class X

The Vision Rehabilitation team at the Bob Ohlson Centre
for Sight Enhancement and Rehabilitation, GMR Varalakshmi Campus, is proud of their client N Durga Prasad who has cleared his Class X examinations with a 9.2 score. Durga has had impaired vision since childhood due to Heredo Macular Degeneration, an ocular condition that causes permanent damage to the central vision. He craved to perform as well as his sighted peers in his academics, and from 2010, has been counseled and supported by the rehabilitation team where he trained on low vision devices such as the monocular telescope and cut-away stand magnifier that allowed him to copy from his classroom board and read from text books independently and efficiently. A grateful Durga acknowledges the team in his achievement, and plans to further train on computer skills at the centre so he can become a Chartered Accountant.

Awards & Honours

Savitri Sharma received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Senior Achievement Award for this year.

Alumnus K V Ravi Kumar was recognized by Sri L V Subrahmanyam, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Andhra Pradesh, for his innovative sewing machine technique for iris dialysis repair, IOL relocation and Iris coloboma repair.

L V Prasad Eye Institute was rated over 4 on a scale of 5 by customers on Justdial as on April 2015. The certificate stated that LVPEI’s customers held the institute in “great esteem” and see the institute as “one of the best in business”.

Optometry faculty Dharani completed her certification in Radiation Safety at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, and is now trained to work in Ocular Brachytherapy at LVPEI’s upcoming Institute for Eye Cancer.

 

Visitors & Updates

LVPEI completed 28 years of patient care on June 1, 2015. The day was commemorated as the 29th Patient Care Day.

The LVPEI family raised a fund of over Rs 3 lakhs for the victims of the Nepal earthquake. The amount was transferred to SightLife India for disbursement.

The LASIK team at LVPEI Hyderabad achieved a record 300 LASIK cases for the month of May 2015.
