New Initiatives Launched at Vijayawada Campus

Commemorating the landmark 5th year anniversary of Kode Venkatadri Chowdary Campus, Vijayawada, several new initiatives were launched on 19 February 2016:

  • Andhra Pradesh Eye Banking Initiative and the Tej Kohli Eye Bank by Sri N Chandrababu Naidu, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

  • The KVC Vijayawada component of LVPEI's Academy of Eye Care Education by Sri M Venkaiah Naidu, Hon'ble Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and Parliamentary Affairs.
  • Children's Eye Health Initiative - supported by United States Agency for International Development (US AID) - by Dr Kamineni Srinivas, Hon'ble Minister for Health, Medical Education & Family Welfare, Andhra Pradesh.
 
Vision Centres #127, #128, #129, #130

LVPEI's 127th and 128th Vision Centres were inaugurated on 29 January 2016, and the 129th and 130th Vision Centres were inaugurated on 30 January 2016. The capital expenses of these centres are supported by One Sight Foundation, USA, and the operational expenses by Smt and Sri Bollu Murali Mohan and family.

Vision Centres #129: Bollu Raghavaiah Vision Centre, Kota, Nellore District, AP.

Vision Centres #130: Bollu Ramaiah Vision Centre, Naidupeta, Nellore District, AP.

Dignitaries present included Ms Pritika Idnani, Manager, India and South East Asia, One Sight Foundation, USA; Smt and Sri Bollu Murali Mohan and their family members; and other local leaders. These centres are attached to the Secondary Centre - Swarna Bharat Eye Centre, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
With these, the LVPEI network is now spread across 150 centres.

 
 

Awards & Honours

Pediatric Perimeter - a novel device to check visual field of babies, developed by PremNandhini Satgunam and her team from Srujana Innovation Centre - won the BioAsia Innovation Award; 10 February.


Subhabrata Chakrabarti has been selected as a mentor for the 2016 ARVO Global Mentorship program - a new initiative by The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.


Shrikant Bharadwaj has been invited to serve as an Associate Topical Editor for Optometry and Vision Science (OVS) journal.


Vanita Pathak-Ray's poster ‘Ostial Irido Zonulo Hyaloido Vitrectomy (IZHV): anterior segment solution for posterior segment complication - preventing aqueous misdirection in high risk patients' won the best poster award at the 8th International Congress of Glaucoma Surgery (ICGS) meeting, Muscat, Oman; 17-20 February.


Kishore Babu officiated as Speaker and Moderator of the workshop ‘Transformation of paper to paperless records' jointly organized by the Department of Medical Records, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, and the Health Information Management Association of India (HIMA); 30 January.


Ramayamma International Eye Bank (RIEB)

won an award for ‘Excellence in Eye Banking 2015' and a special award for reaching the milestone of ‘2000+ transplants in 2015' at the SightLife Annual Meeting; 30 January.


Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, Hyderabad won the 2nd prize at the Garden Festival 2016 organized by the Government of Telangana, Horticulture Department; 13 February.

Ninth Annual Antonio Champalimaud Symposium

The Ninth Annual Antonio Champalimaud Research Symposium was held on 31 January 2016. Prof Sir Peng Khaw, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, a world-renowned specialist in glaucoma, delivered the 9th Annual Champalimaud lecture: ‘From Repair to Regeneration - Translational Research Changes Lives.' In addition to this, there were invited talks by Prof V Nagaraja, Bengaluru;

Prof Bruno Rossion, Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium; Prof Rainer Goebel, Maastricht, Netherlands; Prof Sushmita Kaushik, Chandigarh; and presentations by the LVPEI research group. Dr Leonor Beleza, President, Champalimaud Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal handed over the plaque to Professor Sir Peng Khaw.

 
Joint Academy Seminar on the ‘Brain and the Eye'

‘The Brain and the Eye' seminar jointly organized by the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, was hosted by LVPEI, Hyderabad, 1-2 February 2016. The two-day seminar had presentations by 11 scientists from Europe (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, UK) and 12 from India (Kolkata, Pune, Bengaluru, Manesar, Mumbai, Kanpur and Hyderabad) on topics such as visual perception and action; visual restoration; brain development and plasticity; and brain development and clinical aspects. Active discussions were also held.

First Tele-ophthalmic Slit Lamp installed at Paloncha Secondary Centre. The drone slit lamp will undergo trial runs before being employed at Vision Centres.


RIEB distributed the highest number of harvested tissues in a single month - 273 transplantable corneas were distributed to surgeons across the country for the month of January.
