Vision Centres #131, #132 and #133

#131 Kamalapur Vision Centre, Jagatsingpur District, Odisha was inaugurated on 25 February 2016. It is supported by the Jaga Mohan Memorial Trust, Jagatsingpur. Dignitaries present included Professor N K Das, Chairman, Jaga Mohan Memorial Trust; Trustees Sri Nikunj Kumar Das, Sri Siddarda Das, Sri Saswat Das and their family members.

#132 Sujatha Nagar Vision Centre, Khammam District, Telangana, and #133 Chebrolu Vision Centre, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh were inaugurated on 1st and 2nd

March 2016 respectively. Capital support is by Latter Day Saint Charities, USA, represented by Elder Newton and Sister Newton at the inauguration.

   
Glaucoma Awareness Week

A series of activities commemorated Glaucoma Awareness Week, 6-12 March 2016:

@Hyderabad: Glaucoma Awareness Walk on 6th March had Hyderabad Royals (Royal Enfield motorcycle club) flagging off the walk along with fashion designer and model Shilpa Reddy and other celebrities from Tollywood. A press conference and an interactive patient forum were also conducted.
@Bhubaneswar: Awareness Walk, a skit along with dance, and an interactive patient forum comprised the activities.

@Visakhapatnam: The walk was flagged off by Sri N Yuvaraj, District Collector & Magistrate. Also present were Sri U B Reddie, Senior Environmental Engineer, APPCB; Sri Ran Rajendra Kapwartur, Unit Head, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Parawada.

@Vijayawada: A total of 37 vision technicians from various vision centres were trained on basic identification and evaluation of glaucoma - relative afferent pupillary defect, assessment of anterior chamber depth using slit lamp bio microscope and optic disc evaluation using direct ophthalmoscope.

 
Low Vision Awareness Program (LAP) PLUS

The 35th Low Vision Awareness Program (LAP) PLUS, 9-11 March 2016, was in collaboration with the New England College of Optometry (NECO) and New England Eye (NEE), Boston, USA.


Faculty: Dr Nicole Ross and Dr Alexis Malkin from NECO and NEE; Prof Jill Keeffe from University of Melbourne and LVPEI.


Dr Robert DiMartino, Vice-President and Dean - Academic Affairs of NECO gave away the participant certificates.


Topics included Role of technology in low vision rehabilitation, Measuring outcomes in low vision rehabilitation, Global perspectives of low vision rehabilitation, Providing an overview of LVR, Management of a child with cerebral palsy, etc.

 

Awards & Honours

Mohammad Javed Ali won the Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship Award for advance research under the Experienced Researcher category. He gets lifelong benefits

including complete funding for his lacrimal research proposals, academic honorary positions, travels across Europe and monetary personal benefits.


At the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO) meeting, 25 February in Kolkata:


  • Subhadra Jalali won the Platinum Award for 'Impact of the Day-30 screening strategy on the disease presentation and outcome of Retinopathy of Prematurity: The Indian Twin Cities Retinopathy of Prematurity Report Number 3'.

   

  • Sirisha Senthil won a Silver Award for 'Outcomes of trabeculectomy in Microspherophakia'.

 

  • Nikhil Choudhari also won a Silver Award for his paper.

 

  • Shreyas Ramamurthy, Jagadesh C Reddy and Pravin Krishna V's 'Outcomes of descemetopexy for double anterior chamber after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty' was adjudged the Best Cornea Paper.


Subhadra Jalali received the Innovation Category award for 'Modification of an Otoscope to a Pediatric Retinal Camera' at the first Women Ophthalmological Society meeting, Noida, 26-27 March 2016.


LVPEI received the Jury Choice Award at Express Public Health Awards 2016 for “Socially responsive healthcare delivery by private institute”, 5 March 2016 at Hyderabad.

Aurobindo Geriatric Eye Care Centre Inaugurated

 

The first of its kind Aurobindo Geriatric Eye Care Centre was inaugurated at the GMR Varalakshmi campus, Visakhapatnam, on 22 March 2016 by Sri K Nithyananda Reddy, Vice-Chairman, Aurobindo Pharma Limited. Also present was Dr M Sivakumaran, Director, Aurobindo Pharma Limited.

   
Pediatric Eye in Systemic Disease

This was a Continuing Medical Education program for Pediatricians and Ophthalmologists organized at Kode Venkatadri Chowdary campus in Vijayawada on 13 March 2016. Dr Sravya Chitturi from NRI Medical College, Mangalgiri won the first prize in Essay for Paediatrics post-graduates, given away by Prof Md Rahman, HoD of Paediatrics, Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada.

 
Ocular Surface Workshop - III

The third edition of the annual Ocular Surface Workshop was held at LVPEI Hyderabad from 17-20 March 2016. Dr James Chodosh, David Glendenning Cogan Professor of Ophthalmology in Cornea and External Disease,

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, Boston; Dr Deborah Jacobs, MD, Medical Director, Boston Foundation for Sight and Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Boston; Dr Guillermo Amescua, Assistant Professor Clinical Ophthalmology, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami; and Dr Virender Sangwan, LVPEI Hyderabad were the chief instructors of the workshop, attended by over 100 participants from 9 countries including India.

 
First Ever Corneal Transplantation at Secondary Centre

LVPEI created history by conducting a Corneal Transplantation surgery – a complex eye surgery – at its secondary eye care centre, the Edward and Soona Brown Eye Centre, Dhulipalla village, Guntur district, AP on 28 March 2016. Dr Pravin K Vaddavalli led the surgical team from the Tej Kohli Cornea Institute, with follow-up care by the ophthalmologist at Dhulipalla centre.
