Indian Oil Centre for Rural Eye Health

With an aim to provide solutions to visual impairment in rural Odisha, the Indian Oil Centre for Rural Eye Health was inaugurated at the Bhubaneswar Campus on 19 May 2016 by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Honorable Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. Sri Pritish Bharat, General Manager, Odisha State Office, IOCL was also present on the occasion. The Indian Oil Corporation is funding Rs 2 crore as part of its CSR contribution.

Complex Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at Rural Centre

For the first time, a complex ophthalmic plastic surgery was performed at a rural secondary centre - the Bhosle Gopal Rao Patil Eye Centre in Mudhole, Adilabad District, Telangana - on 21 May 2016. Dr Milind Naik led the surgery that involved a medial orbitotomy on a 65 year old male patient to debulk the lesion followed by a sclerotherapy.

Virender S Sangwan was ranked among the top 10 medical researchers in terms of publications in India in a bibliometric study by the Department of Science and Technology. In the study period of 2009-2014, Dr Sangwan had about 100 publications that ranked him fourth.

Mamatha Reddy Muppidi won 'Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award (IYBA) - 2015' award by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

Taraprasad Das has been re-elected as Regional Chair - South East Asia, International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) for four years commencing October 2016.

Optometry alumna Preeji Sudharman won the 2016 William C Ezell Fellowship offered by the American Optometric Foundation.

Optometry alumnus Vivek Labhishetty won the Dr Emerson Woodruff Scholarship in Paediatrics for the third time in a row.

Students seeking rehabilitation services passed their 10th to 12th grade examinations with flying colours. They were provided educational support and guidance including digital audio books, Braille books, large print books, scribe facility, reader service, educational scholarships, college admissions, remedial coaching etc.

The program is supported by Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust through the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI). LVPEI Bhubaneswar, Capital Hospital and

AIIMS Bhubaneswar under the collaboration of Directorate of Health Services, Odisha, are the mentoring partners for this program that involves hands-on training of Ophthalmologists, and skill up-gradation for ophthalmic surgeons, ophthalmic officers and physicians.
