Timely Screening and Intervention Prevents Sight Loss in a New Born: During the routine screening of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) by our team in LVPEI Bhubaneswar, a one day old baby with congenital glaucoma was diagnosed within hours of birth and was successfully operated. The child’s cornea has been cleared substantially and he is no longer at risk of losing his eyesight permanently.


Four New Vision Centres inaugurated: The 117th vision centre, was inaugurated at Kankipadu in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh on 13 April. Operation Eye Sight, Canada funded the capital expenditure and Dr Gullapali V Rao and family contributed towards the operational expenses of the centre. The 118th, 119th and 120th Vision Centres supported by Latter-day Saint Charities, USA were inaugurated in Kollur, Nagaram and Karlapalem villages respectively in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh on 26 June.


Rehabilitation Clients Ace Exams: 21 student clients of LVPEI's Rehabilitation Services have aced their Intermediate examinations this year. These students were provided with educational support and guidance through remedial teaching and assistive devices.


Spreading Awareness about Retinoblastoma: As part of the Retinoblastoma (a type of eye cancer, affecting children between 0-3 years) Awareness Week, 11-16 May, a series of public awareness activities were organized across the LVPEI network. The event concluded with a blood donation drive- Bloodline, flagged off by Tollywood actor

Nara Rohit. Also significant was the support extended by Joyalukkas Foundation this year as well for supplying food supplements to children with retinoblastoma.


LVPEI completed 28 years of patient care: Completed 28 years of patient care on 1st June. The day was commemorated as the 29th Patient Care Day.


Low Vision Awareness Program: The 33rd Low Vision Awareness Program (LAP), a
bi-annual event of LVPEI, organized on 3 April, received active participation from 150 eye health care professionals from across the country.


Crusade Against Diabetic Blindness: A CME (Continuous Medical Education) titled “Crusade against diabetic blindness” was conducted on 24 May at LVPEI Bhubaneswar under the aegis of the Odisha State Ophthalmic society. The event was supported by All India Ophthalmic Society’s Academic and Research Committee.


Special Education: An education program on Low Vision and Rehabilitation Services was organized for the students of Special Education at the Andhra University on 20 April.


LVPEI Supports Victims of Nepal Earthquake: The LVPEI family raised a fund of over Rs 3 lakhs for the victims of the Nepal earthquake.

Awards & Accolades

Won the India Healthcare Awards 2014, jointly instituted by CNBC TV18 and ICICI Lombard, in the category Best Single Specialty Hospital - Ophthalmology on 8 June.


Received the Best Management Award given by the Labour Employment Training and Factories Department, Government of Telangana on 1 May.


Rated over 4 on a scale of 5 by customers on Justdial as on April 2015. The certificate issued by Justdial stated that LVPEI's customers held the institute in "great esteem" and see the institute as "one of the best in business".

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness. If you have diabetes, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.
