Miriam Hyman Children's
Eye Care Centre inaugurated
When young Miriam Hyman passed away tragically in the London terrorist bombings on July 7, 2005, her family was devastated. She was only 32. Her parents John and Mavis and elder sister Esther could have slipped into a depression. But they resolved to channel their grief in a constructive way and find positive ways to remember her. Thus was born the Miriam Hyman Memorial Fund, which later became a full charity known as the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust. With the support of caring friends and family they began to raise funds, while searching for a deserving cause to support.
Meanwhile, LVPEI was planning a children's eye care centre in the Bhubaneswar campus and was looking for a partner in this endeavor. A shared association with ORBIS International brought them together - the brave kind-hearted Hyman family met one of the best eye care systems in the world, making the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre (MHCECC) a reality.

On July 3, 2008, amidst the second anniversary celebrations of L V Prasad Eye Institute, Bhubaneswar, the MHCECC was inaugurated by the Chief Secretary of Orissa Mr Ajit Tripathi, in the presence of Secretary for Women and Child Welfare Mrs Mona Sharma, Country Director for cultural affairs from the British Council Mr Rod Pryde and his wife Sussanne. Esther Hyman flew in from UK to represent her family on this momentous occasion, a few days before the 3rd death anniversary of Miriam.
The highlight of the evening was Esther's moving tribute to Miriam. Later Esther and Rod Pryde planted saplings. At the press conference, Group Chairman Dr Gullapalli N Rao stated the mission statement for MHCECC - "By 2012, no child in Orissa should be deprived of excellent eye care service, irrespective of the ability to pay, and by 2020 no child in Orissa should be needlessly blind."
