Children's Eye Care Centre celebrates 10th anniversary

The Institute commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Jasti V Ramanamma Children's Eye Care Centre with a seminar 'Eye on the Future' - a scientific symposium on 'Eye Health and Eye Disorders of Children', December 1-2, 2007. The comprehensive program covered all aspects of children's eye health. A Live Surgical Workshop was conducted the day before the seminar, while the second day was dedicated to strabismus. The seminar was attended by 235 delegates, who found the program very useful and informative. The international faculty included Dr Haroon Awan, Pakistan; Dr Bronwyn Bateman, USA; Dr Hannah Faal, Ghana; Dr Clare Gilbert, UK; Dr John Lee, UK; Dr Marilyn Miller, USA; Dr Ken Nischal, UK; Dr R Pararajasegaram, Sri Lanka; and Dr Abu Raihan, Bangladesh.

The Jasti V Ramanamma Children's Eye Care Centre (CECC), set up in 1997, was the first dedicated children's eye care centre in Asia and the developing world. The Centre has state-of-the-art facilities for integrated management of all pediatric eye diseases, and was set up with support from Dr Jasti V Rattaiah and Smt V Ramanamma, with a matching grant from Sight Savers International, UK. Over the past decade the Centre has received substantial support from ORBIS International, USA, and recently ITC Limited, India, for the expansion and upgradation of the facilities.

On the evening of December 1, 2007, a commemorative ceremony was held where Dr Gullapalli N Rao, Chairman, LVPEI, welcomed the guests and Dr Anil Mandal, Head of the Children's Eye Care Centre, spoke of CECC's journey over the past ten years. Dr Hannah Faal, Senior Eye Care Programme Consultant, West Africa, Sight Savers International, Ghana, was requested to present commemorative plaques to the representatives of Dr Jasti Rattaiah and Smt Ramanamma, Sight Savers International, ORBIS International and ITC Limited. The program ended with a mandolin recital by Dr BL Harsha, LVPEI faculty, and a sitar recital by Dr Akhila, wife of Dr Ramesh Kekunnaya, LVPEI faculty. This was followed by dinner on the Institute lawns.
