Ocular Prosthesis Service
Safi Ahmed was only six when he first came to the Institute in 1997. He complained of watering, redness and discharge from his right eye. A severe injury in the right eye had caused an ulcer to develop. Infection had also set in. Safi's parents were heartbroken - they had sought medical intervention but it was too late. Their little one's eye was lost forever and, with it, the quick smile that lit up his innocent face. For two years he was traumatized, suffering the ignominy of living with a single eye. When his parents heard about an artificial eye that could be bought off the shelf, they had young Safi fitted with one. However, his face seemed different, it was not symmetrical as before.
When the Prosthetics Services Clinic was set up in LVPEI, Safi's parents were among the first to enquire about a custom-made eye. They were told that it was a simple procedure, requiring only one sitting with the
ocularist. They learnt that a custom-made eye would make Safi's face look natural. Safi was reluctant to have his eye probed all over again, but overcame his apprehensions to allow the
ocularist, Kuldeep Raizada, to take measurements. The custom-made eye was soon fitted and one could tell by the way Safi often glanced at himself in the mirror that he was happy with it. His confidence and natural ebullience returned. There is a sparkle in his eye and a spring in his step that shows he is comfortable with his appearance.
