Charanya Ramachandran, PhD
Designation: Scientist, Sudhakar & Sreekanth Ravi Stem Cell Biology Laboratory
Location: Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, Hyderabad
Charanya received her basic training (BS) in Optometry from the Elite School of Optometry in Chennai affiliated to BITS Pilani. She followed this with a PhD in Vision Science from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA where she gained the necessary basic research skills to complement her clinical training. Her doctoral work, which was primarily focusedon understanding the cell biology of glaucoma, was supported by the Chancellor’s fellowship. Following this, she joined LVPEI as a post-doctoral research fellow to develop a synthetic polymer scaffold for delivering stem cells to the surface of the eye. This three-year long effort ended with a publication in the journal “Biomaterials” among several others. Charanya has joined the faculty of CORE (Centre for Ocular Regeneration) and her interests are in corneal endothelial development, disease and tissue regeneration. Some specific projects are as follows (a) Understanding the basic physiology and pathophysiology of corneal endothelium (b) Culturing corneal endothelial cells from infant donors / alternate stem cell sources for human transplantation (c) Developing biomaterials to function as carriers for the corneal endothelium (d) Understanding the embryological development of the corneal endothelium.
