Designation: Microbiologist, Jhaveri Microbiology Centre
Specialisation: Medical Microbiology
Location: Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, Hyderabad
Joveeta Joseph obtained her masters in Microbiology from Osmania University, Hyderabad and thereafter her PhD in medical microbiology from BITS-Pilani for her thesis entitled “Investigation of Microsporidial Keratitis In India” done at L V Prasad Eye Institute in 2007. She has made significant contributions in the field of ocular microsporidiosis by describing for the first time the staining and electron microscopic features of this novel parasite. She was awarded the Junior Best Paper Award, at the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists 2006 for describing the first report on 16S rRNA gene based PCR assay for species identification of microsporidia in ocular samples. She also obtained the G P Agarwal Young Scientist Award, 2006 for her work on role of MMPs in corneal button of patients with fungal keratitis and wound healing. She later moved to the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, in 2008 to work as Research Associate in the area of microbial transformations and screening for natural product microbial bioactives having antimicrobial and acetylcholine esterase (AChE) inhibitor activity. Dr Joseph was also awarded the DST - Fast Track Scheme For Young Scientist grant in 2008 and the DST-Women Scientist Scheme grant, in 2013 for her work on antimicrobial resistance. Since joining LVPEI as faculty in August 2014, she is involved in diagnostic and research activities pertaining to ocular infections. During the course of her research career, Joveeta has over 30 publications and also made several presentations at various national and international conferences including being awarded the Dr C.S. Bhaskaran Gold Medal at the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, AP Chapter 2015 and more recently, including being recognized with the Young scientist award 2016 by the Telangana Academy of Sciences.
