Dr Pavan Kumar Verkicharla
Designation: Scientist, Myopia Lab
Location: Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, Hyderabad
Pavan Kumar Verkicharla completed his Bachelor in Optometry from Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry, L V Prasad Eye Institute. He moved to Australia to pursue doctoral research at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) under the mentorship of Professor David Atchison (Myopia and Ophthalmic Optics Lab). During his doctoral research, Pavan developed and validated a new method based on partial coherence interferometry for determining retinal shape for its application in myopia research, and performed investigations related to myopia. He was also involved in teaching undergraduate students at QUT and served as a secretary for "QUT-Optical Society of America Student Chapter". After his PhD, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the myopia research lab in Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), Singapore with Professor Seang-Mei Saw. His research was centered on understanding the pathophysiology of pathologic myopia and epidemiological aspects of myopia. Pavan has publications in international peer reviewed journals and is also a reviewer for few Optometry/Ophthalmology journals.
As a young researcher, he continues his passion in myopia research and would like to invest more time understanding pathophysiology of myopia and develop a cost-effective anti-myopia strategy that can be used worldwide. He returned to India after gaining post-doctoral experience to establish a full fledged/exclusive myopia research lab in India. Now, as a Scientist at the Brien Holden Institute of Optometry and Vision Sciences, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), his research involves both basic and applied aspects of myopia mainly investigating epidemiology, pathogenesis/causation of myopia/pathologic myopia and anti-myopia strategies.
