Low Vision Assistive Device Helps Rohit’s Academics

Born with albinism, Rohit Navneet Krishna, has been using spectacles since he was just 9 months. In 2002 when his parents brought him to LVPEI for a general eye check-up, the then consulting doctor informed them about the Low Vision (LV) Services offered by the Institute. “Till then we were unaware that such specialized and professional services even exist. So it was a big relief to know that there was somebody to help us manage Rohit’s low vision,” says Sita Lakshmi, his mother.

Rohit was prescribed a magnifier and pocket telescope, and detailed training and guidance was provided to him and his mother on how to use them. Since then they have been regularly visiting the Institute for follow up and to keep themselves abreast with the latest developments in the field of low vision.

Today Navneet, 16, has completed his schooling from one of the most reputed schools in Hyderabad. He scored 8.2 and 7.2 percentile in his 10th and 12th grades respectively. “We are very happy that he achieved this score without the help of any extra time and scribe. For us more than the scores, it is important that he becomes self reliant. There are a plethora of services available for people with LV, all they need is proper guidance and training,” says Ms Lakshmi. Rohit is currently preparing for Chartered Accountant - Common Proficiency Test.
