Meera and L B Deshpande Centre for Sight Enhancement

The Meera and L B Deshpande Centre for Sight Enhancement has a team of clinical specialists, dedicated to the needs of people with low vision. At the OPD counter patients are examined to determine if they have low vision. Those with problems that cannot be treated through medical or surgical intervention, or who cannot be helped by the use of ordinary spectacles or contact lenses, are referred to this centre.

The Centre has a team of opticians and optometrists specially trained to deal with low vision problems. They evaluate the visual capacity of a patient through a series of tests and procedures (find out more). After a thorough assessment, clinicians prescribe low vision devices, such as optical devices like specially developed hand-held telescopes or non-optical devices, like stands for books or special lights for reading. (See Low vision resources)

Whenever possible LVPEI works hand-in-hand with manufacturers to devise and manufacture inexpensive versions of low vision devices, which were earlier available only at international prices.

Once the evaluation is over and low vision devices have been prescribed, the patient moves to the next stage.
