Evaluation of Donor Cornea

Soon after its retrieval, the condition of the donor cornea tissue is  evaluated against a comprehensive checklist of criteria that help determine whether the tissue is suitable for transplantation. We demonstrate both gross and biomicroscopic evaluation of the whole globe and the corneo-scleral rim as prescribed by the Federation of Eye and Tissue Banks International. The scientific procedures of grading donor cornea are specified for the conjunctiva, sclera, corneal epithelium, corneal stroma, the Descemet's membrane and the endothelium. The video explains the use of specular microscopy for estimating endothelial cell counts.

This educational video has been produced by the LV Prasad Eye Institute in collaboration with the ORBIS International. It is an important instructional tool for eye banking in India as it will educate an entire generation of eye bank professionals from trainee cornea specialists to eye bank technicians and eye bank managers about the meticulous and dedicated manner in which the precious gift of sight is passed on from one human being to another.
