Laboratory investigations of ocular infections would provide specific diagnosis and therapy leading to quicker recovery. The standard materials and methods, specimen collection, processing of samples in the virology, mycology and microbiology laboratories is demonstrated. Culture methods and culture identification too are discussed in this AIOS award-winning video.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Ocular Viral Infections

Author: Dr Athmanathan Sreedharan
Year of Publication: April, 2001
Duration: 18:24 minutes

Viral Infections of the eye, especially those caused by herpes viruses are often sight-threatening. Almost all groups of viruses are capable of infecting the eye, but some are particularly common. This video illustrates in a simple step-by-step approach, the various procedures followed for sample collection, transportation, processing of specimens and reporting for the laboratory diagnosis of some common viral infections of the eye. Direct smear examination by PAP/Giemsa stains, viral antigen detection by IFA/IP assays, conventional/shell vial assays for virus cultures and molecular diagnostic methods like PCR/In-Situ hybridization have been explained with appropriate and adequate visuals of originally-processed specimens.

Mimics of Retinoblastoma

Author: Dr Kashyap Geeta Vemuganti
Year of Publication: July, 1999
TRT: 09:50 minutes

The clinical presentation of Retinoblastoma, the most common malignant childhood tumour of the eye, mimics many non-malignant proliferative and infective conditions. We describe the clinico-pathological correlation with gross appearance and the histopathology of a few rare cases, which were enucleated for suspected Retinoblastoma. In the era of preventive oncology and organ saving strategies, it becomes extremely important to identify these mimics of retinoblastoma utilising the best possible and available diagnostic skills.

Ophthalmic Pathology: An Overview

Ophthalmic pathology is the conscience of our field and no surgical or pharmacological treatment can have its effect validated without histopathological confirmation. A good understanding of the subject comes with a proper knowledge of the pathological techniques. This video presentation deals briefly with the proper sample collection using appropriate fixatives, grossing procedures and various techniques used in the ophthalmic pathology division. The pride of any pathology department lies in its museum. We briefly demonstrate the museum techniques and illustrate a few rare cases.
