Smt Kanuri Santhamma Retina Vitreous Centre

"It was two years ago that the local eye specialist diagnosed the problem in my right eye to be Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). (What is this? Link to I Q&A) He said that no treatment was available for this condition. Another specialist confirmed the diagnosis and advised me to contact LVPEI, Hyderabad, to see if any treatment was possible.

"At the Retina Vitreous Centre of the Institute, I learnt that I had lost 85 percent of the vision in my right eye. Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) was the only means of retaining the remaining 15 percent vision. It comprised of an intravenous injection of Visudyne with photocoagulation treatment. I received the treatment in May 2002. The doctors warned me that I may not recover my lost vision; the treatment was only meant to prevent further deterioration. I was asked to come back for a check-up after a month.

"A few days later, to my surprise, I noticed a spectacular improvement in my vision in the right eye. This was confirmed at the Institute during my visits in June and July 2002. It was wonderful and I felt deeply grateful to the doctors."
