Biography
Dr Akash Belenje completed his MBBS from the K. S. Hegde Medical Academy in Mangalore, followed by his MS in Ophthalmology from Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Medical College, Dharwad. He then pursued a fellowship in surgical retina and vitreous from L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.
He has presented papers and posters at the Karnataka and Telangana state conferences, the Vitreo-Retina Society of India’s annual conference, and at the World ROP Congress. He is also part of the editorial board of the Telangana Ophthalmological Society.
Dr Belenje’s areas of interest are pediatric retinal diseases, endophthalmitis, and diabetic retinopathy. He has published extensively on pediatric retinal diseases, particularly Retinopathy of Prematurity, and has authored the book ‘LVPEI Atlas of Retinopathy of Prematurity and other neonatal retinal diseases.’
He received the P Ramachander competitive free paper award at the Telangana Ophthalmological Society Annual Conference 2022 for his work on COVID safety guidelines and risk stratification in managing ROP. He later received the V V Ramana Rao Award at the Telangana Ophthalmological Society Annual Conference in 2024 for his work on the impact of anemia correction in babies with ROP.
He was honored with the Prof Yasuo Tano Travel Grant in 2024 at the 17th Asia Pacific Vitreoretinal Society Congress in Singapore and the prestigious J M Pahwa Best Free Paper Award at the Vitreoretinal Society India Annual Congress 2024.
