Biography
Dr. Anup Kelgaonkar is a clinician, surgeon, educator and researcher in – Vitreo-Retinal Diseases, Uveitis & Medical Retina, Mithu Tulsi Chanrai Campus, L V Prasad Eye Institute, Bhubaneswar. He brings a multifaceted approach to the fields of vitreoretinal diseases and ocular immunology, bridging advanced medical science and surgeries with compassionate, humanistic patient care.
Dr Kelgaonkar provides comprehensive care for patients with complex infectious and non-infectious uveitis. He is a vitreoretinal surgeon and specializes in the treatment of advanced vitreoretinal disorders. He completed his MS in Ophthalmology at Government Medical College, Nagpur, followed by a senior registrarship at BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai, and a two-year fellowship in Vitreo-Retina and Uveitis at LVPEI. Clinically and surgically, his practice spans the full spectrum of medical and surgical retina—from macular and retinal vascular disease to complex vitrectomy—integrating high-quality imaging with an evidence-based, patient-centered approach.
His clinical research bridges uveitis, retina, and ocular imaging, with a primary focus on infectious retinitis, particularly ocular toxoplasmosis and its diagnostic mimickers. He has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications covering uveitis, medical retina and surgical retina. His investigative work into atypical presentations of Ocular toxoplasmosis, earned him the prestigious Prof. Amod Gupta Young Researcher Award from the Uveitis Society of India (USI) in 2024.He has been a part of several multicenter randomized clinical trials.
An active contributor to LVPEI’s academic mission, Dr Kelgaonkar mentors’ fellows and residents through structured case discussions, and skills-based workshops. He was the organizer and course lead for the LVPEI Uveitis Course 3.0, a flagship 12-month online subspecialty program that drew approximately 400 participants in its 2025 cohort, making it LVPEI Academy’s highest-enrolled long-running online subspecialty course to date. He is a passionate advocate for medical education, innovation and research.
Beyond ophthalmology, Dr Kelgaonkar is an author, poet, and long-time Heartfulness meditator and trainer. His reflections on the inner journey culminated in his poetry collection, Echoes from a growing heart (2025), which explores themes from youthful longing to spiritual seeking. Poems from this compilation have been featured on national professional platforms, including the USI newsletter. This unique blend of clinician, surgeon, researcher, educator, author, poet and meditation trainer reflects his broader commitment to caring for both the eye and the person, bringing together scientific rigor, reflective practice, and profound empathy.
