Harekrushna Sahu aspires to join Indian Administrative Services and wants to advocate for the rights of blind people. Looking at the perseverance of this 17-year old young boy who belongs to a humble family from Mayurbhanj in Odisha, this might be a reality soon. He was diagnosed with life-threatening retinoblastoma eye cancer in both his eyes in the year 2005. Due to unavailability of treatment there, his parents took him to LVPEI Hyderabad. When in 2006 LVPEI's Bhubaneswar campus started its services, they were relieved to receive the same care closer to their home. The doctors could not save his vision from the fast-spreading eye cancer despite continuous monitoring and chemotherapy but were successful in saving his life. By the time he was five, both his eyes were enucleated (removed). His parents were devastated, but the counselling support they received from the vision rehabilitation team helped them develop a positive outlook. Recently when Harekrushna came to meet Dr Suryasnata Rath - his treating doctor, he enthralled everyone with his melodious song. It was heartening to see him so confident and LVPEI wishes him a bright future.
