The strong partnership between LVPEI and MFI International started with a capacity building relationship that evolved from a series of visits between MFI ownership - Mrs Cecilia Levine and her husband Mr Lance Levine; and LVPEI leaders - Dr Pravin Krishna, Dr Avinash Patchava, Dr Vipin Das and Mr. Raghu Gullapalli. The purpose of these mutual visits were so Cecilia and Lance Levine could learn more about the LVPEI pyramid model of equitable eye care and learn how to replicate this success in Northern Mexico. These exchanges resulted in the creation of the Convision Eye Center in Juarez, Mexico.
With the COVID 19 outbreak, a consortium has been created that includes MFI International, LVPEI, the Medical Center of Americas Foundation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and engineers throughout Latin America. Raghu Gullapalli and Dr Vineet Joshi are providing technical expertise to this consortium to develop a ventilator that is affordable and easy to put together. MFI is also manufacturing the OS Visors developed by LVPEI. Convision Eye Center was LVPEI EyeSmart's first customer in the Western Hemisphere.
