Fifteen trainees from the Masters in Hospital Management (MHM) Program, Class of 2026, at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) recently visited the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, for an institutional exposure visit.
The program was designed to help the trainees understand the operational, clinical, and administrative functioning of a not-for-profit eye care institution. The group was taken on a guided tour across various departments, including outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, the artificial eye clinic, the chemotherapy ward for children with eye cancer, the vision rehabilitation centre, jute production centre and exclusive facility, and the Ramayamma International Eye Bank.
The visit also introduced the trainees to LVPEI’s unique tiered payment model that ensures cross-subsidized care; providing services at no cost to those in need—without compromising on quality, while offering paid options for those who can afford it. Trainees observed how infrastructure and patient care intersect through thoughtfully designed clinical spaces, accessibility features, and patient engagement programs.
A highlight of the visit was the discussion on the longstanding public-private partnership between LVPEI and NIMS, particularly in the success of the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP) initiated in 1989. Mr Kishan Reddy Thota, senior member of the eye bank team, shared his insights into the program’s impact and evolution over the years.
The trainees also heard about the institution’s foundational values and vision through stories shared about Dr Gullapalli N Rao, Founder-Chair, and Sri L V Prasad, the founding patron.
The visit was well received by the participants, who expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn from a model that integrates clinical excellence with equitable access to care.
