LVPEI crosses a major clean energy milestone; generates 1 crore units of solar power

The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has achieved a significant sustainability milestone this month by crossing 1 Crore (10 million) units of total solar energy generation across our network of campuses. This achievement arrives after nearly nine years of continuous solar power adoption, beginning with the first rooftop solar installation at our campus in Kismatpur (December 2016), with power generation commencing in January 2017.

We have been steadily scaling our solar energy capacity to reduce dependence on grid power and minimize our carbon footprint. Today, our Institute operates solar installations across 33 campuses, significantly offsetting electricity needs across our tertiary and secondary centres!

Several centres now meet 30-80% of their total monthly electricity consumption through solar power, and some secondary centres exceed 60-80% clean-energy contribution. This achievement aligns with LVPEI’s larger sustainability roadmap; from green buildings and water conservation systems to tele‑ophthalmology, waste reduction, responsible recycling, and increased biodiversity across campuses.

What 1 crore solar units mean for the environment and LVPEI

The impact of this cumulative solar generation is significant. From our first rooftop solar panel switched on in early 2017, the sun has quietly powered our hospitals, clinics, classrooms, and labs, day after day, year after year. And now, after almost a decade, our effort has added up to something remarkable:
      -  Saving nearly ₹10 crore in electricity costs, money that could instead go back into patient care.
      -  Preventing 8,050 tons of carbon emissions, helping keep the air cleaner for the communities we serve.
      -  This impact is the same as planting 3.22 lakh trees; an entire forest grown through sunlight alone.

These numbers represent not only operational savings but also LVPEI’s growing commitment to responsible and climate‑conscious healthcare delivery! A promise to continue building a future where high‑quality eye care goes hand‑in‑hand with environmental responsibility.

We are grateful for the generous support by the Government of India, and our donors who believed in a greener LVPEI.
