LVPEI Intern Wins National Research Award for CVI Study

Jangapally Varsha, an optometry intern from the LVPEI-GITAM School of Optometry, won the 9th IVI–Brien Holden Young Researcher Rolling Trophy Award. She competed against optometry trainees from across India, and claimed a rolling trophy for the institution and an individual cash prize of INR 10,000.

The research presented was part of an ongoing study on the clinical profile of children with cerebral visual impairment (CVI), conducted by interns Arradi Ravali, Jatti Soumya, and Jangapally Varsha. The work was noted for its clinical insight and multidisciplinary approach. Only interim findings were presented at the competition.

The current project is being mentored by Jahnavi Kanchustambham, Karthik Bhushan (physiotherapist), Shobitha Sankar (rehabilitation), and Dr PremNandhini Satgunam. The study combines clinical observation, background reading, and a deeper understanding of CVI beyond visual aspects. The previous time an LVPEI intern received this award last was in 2016 - Navya Deepthi, mentored by Dr PremNandhini Satgunam.
