Institutes of Excellence

Vision: To globally make a significant impact on the problem of blindness and visual impairment.

Mission: To control all major forms of blindness and visual impairment in India and globally through dedicated efforts towards their prevention and treatment by creating an interlinked network of ‘Global Resource Centres’ followed by the development of ‘Regional Centres’ using prevention and treatment strategies, and human resources development for the care of eye problems and research.

The Institutes of Excellence program was conceived on the 25th anniversary of LVPEI. Envisaged as global resource centres, they will not only focus on caring for patients at all levels of eye care but also creating and disseminating new knowledge. The first institute of excellence was the Cornea Institute, followed by the Institute for Eye Care for the Elderly, the Child Sight Institute, Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer and most recently, the Anant Bajaj Retina Institute. Several individual Institutes of Excellence are also evolving.

Centres of Excellence: Within each Institute of Excellence are smaller Centres of Excellence based out of a particular campus. These centres are dedicated to tackling eye problems in a limited geographical area or focused on specific eye conditions.
