Liberia Eye Health Initiative
LEC is L V Prasad Eye Institute’s collaborative center at the John F Kennedy Memorial Medical Center in Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia in West Africa.
About the centre
The Center was formally inaugurated by the then President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Her Excellency Dr Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on 24 July 2017. This was the first time LVPEI set up and supported operations of an eye center outside India.
LEC provides high quality eye care services in Liberia. LVPEI has been developing infrastructure, human resources and is offering operational systems on a sustainable basis. Additionally, we are developing and implementing a countrywide community eye health program for Liberia.
The key partners who contributed towards its development were the Lions Clubs International Foundation, Operation Eyesight Universal, Indo-American Eye Care Society, the Latter-Day Saint Charities, and OneSight Essilor Luxottica Foundation.
Today, the Center is a self-sustainable, modern, comprehensive eye care facility within the larger JFK Medical Center complex. LEC offers tertiary-level care and serves as a national resource for the country. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Liberia, the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and EYElliance, USA we offer an Ophthalmology residency training program. Over time, we have trained 4 ophthalmologists, along with many mid-level ophthalmic personnel.
