280 Lawmakers and Legislative Staff Screened in Monrovia: Free Eye Screening at the Capitol Building

Published 2nd November 2026

The LVPEI–Liberia Eye Center, operating at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center (JFKMC), held a free eye-screening program at the Capitol Building in Monrovia as part of the World Sight Day 2026 observance. The program offered eye-screening services to members of the House of Representatives and legislative staff.

A total of 280 people were screened, and 173 were referred for further eye evaluation or care based on the screening findings. The referrals highlight the importance of follow-up examinations to establish diagnoses and decide whether treatment or other eye-care services are needed. The program aimed to bring eye-care services closer to public officials and legislative employees, promote preventive care and the early identification of vision problems, and raise awareness about protecting vision. It also encouraged participants to have regular eye examinations and seek professional care whenever they experience vision problems.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Richard Nagbe Koon, commended the Liberia Eye Center for bringing the initiative to the Legislature. He described the program as timely and important for the health and well-being of lawmakers and legislative staff. He also praised the Center’s efforts to expand access to eye-care services and raise awareness about preventable vision impairment.
