SPARC
Portable peripheral refraction guiding tool, for myopia management.
Problem statement
While central refractive error correction is common, peripheral refraction is crucial for managing myopia progression, but measuring it traditionally requires expensive, non-portable, open field autorefractors. Advanced devices for measuring peripheral eye refractive errors are not easily available in rural or small clinical settings.
About the product / solution
SPARC (Simplified Peripheral Ancillary Refractive Component) is a portable, low-cost ophthalmic device to enhance myopia management. It is designed to allow eye care professionals to measure peripheral refractive errors accurately, particularly in resource-limited settings.
- Easily mountable in the trial frame worn by patients
- A red reflector behind three slits, to be visible on shining retinoscopy beam at 0°, 22° nasal & 22° temporal positions
- Accurate peripheral measurement at 22° nasal and temporal eccentricities.
- Detecting relative peripheral hyperopia (RPH), which is a key factor in the development and progression of myopia.
- A cost-effective, easy-to-use tool for optometrists and ophthalmologists, especially in outreach or community eye care
Impact
Clinical: Supports evidence-based myopia management
Research: Facilitates peripheral optics studies
