Dr Ruby Kala Prakasam began her career as an optometry fellow at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in 2000, where she received training in comprehensive and specialty optometry. She subsequently served as a contact lens practitioner and clinical educator from 2002 to 2008, with a focus on specialty contact lens practice. She pursued her Master’s degree at the University of New South Wales, focusing on corneal inlays in humans. She later earned her PhD (summa cum laude) in corneal confocal imaging from the University of Rostock, where she also served as a postdoctoral fellow specializing in Optical Coherence Tomography.
Her current work centers on educational research and her role as a course instructor for undergraduate optometry students. She is actively involved in training undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as early-career faculty, through periodic workshops on foundational skills and active learning methods, journal clubs, and Training of Trainers programs, contributing to the advancement of educational practices.
Her research focuses on the development and validation of innovative teaching and assessment strategies, including JAM Clinical Pearls, concept mapping, game-based learning, situational judgement tests, simulation, and reflective practice. Her work has been presented at national and international forums and published in several peer-reviewed journals.
