Geeta K Vemuganti

Dr Geeta K Vemuganti served LVPE from June1998 to December 2010 as Head of Ophthalmic Pathology and Sudhakar and Sreekant Ravi Stem Cell Lab. She was invited as a Professor of eminence by University of Hyderabad where she served as Professor and founder Dean , School of Medical Sciences and superannuated in January 2025. She returned to LVPEI as Distinguished Pathologist and Scientist in February 2025.

After her medical graduation from J L N Medical College Ajmer, she obtained her Diploma in Clinical Pathology from Osmania Medical college and MD pathology from Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences

Her experience and expertise is in the area of ocular tumors and stem cell biology, where she has contributed to cutting edge research that has led to bench-to-bedside applications. Her current research focuses on cancer stem cells in Retinoblastoma, new animal models, role of mesenchymal stem cells in leprosy and human lacrimal gland cultures.

Dr Geeta held several honorary positions, including an adjunct professorship of ophthalmology,School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, USA; Chair-Program Committee AP section and Global Member Committee of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO); and President-Indian Society of Ophthalmic Pathology among other professional and academic affiliations.

Dr Geeta has published widely, authoring papers in journals of international repute and has given invited talks at various prestigious institutions including IAEA, NASA. She is also a recipient of several national and international awards including the recent Weisenfeld ARVO Award Lecture 2025, Dr V R Khanolkar Oration from National Academy of Medical Sciences, Senior Achievement Award by American Academy of Ophthalmology, Vishesha Puruskaaram from Dr Ramineni Foundation, USA, and Fellow-National Academy of Medical Sciences, ARVO, Royal College of Pathologists. Dr Vemuganti has received many prestigious academic as well as research grants from national and international agencies and has been on the editorial board of WHO blue book on Classification of Eye Tumors fourth and fifth editions. She has guided many doctoral students and fellows for research projects in both basic and clinical sciences.
