Dr Joveeta Joseph is the Dr Savitri Sharma Chair of Ocular Microbiology and Head of Microbiology Services across the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) Network. She completed her Master’s degree in Microbiology from Osmania University, Hyderabad, and subsequently her PhD in Medical Microbiology from BITS Pilani, where she worked on the characterization of microsporidial keratitis in India at LVPEI (2007). She has made significant contributions to the field of ocular microsporidiosis and was awarded the Junior Best Paper Award at the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM) in 2006, along with the G.P. Agarwal Young Scientist Award the same year for her work on fungal keratitis and wound healing. Her post-doctoral research at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, focused on antimicrobial resistance and was supported by the DST-FAST Track Scheme for Young Scientists (2008) and the DST–Women Scientist Scheme (2013).

Since joining LVPEI as faculty in August 2014, Dr Joseph’s laboratory has focused on understanding host–pathogen interactions in microbial infections, with graduate students investigating genomic and metabolic alterations that could serve as putative biomarkers of disease progression and therapeutic response. Her laboratory is supported by funding from DST-SERB, ICMR, Cipla, and the Rockefeller Foundation. In addition to her research activities, she plays a key role in infection control oversight, diagnostic microbiology services, and training and education of multiple cadres across the institute.

Dr Joseph has published over 170 peer-reviewed manuscripts and serves on the editorial boards of Frontiers in Immunology, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, PLoS One, and BMC Ophthalmology. Her scientific honors include the Dr C.S. Bhaskaran Gold Medal of IAMM (2015) and the Young Scientist Award (2016) and Associate Fellowship (2018) of the Telangana Academy of Sciences. She has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences. She served as an elected Executive Council Member (Central Zone) of the Indian Society of Medical Mycologists (ISMM) from 2023 to 2025 and is a Founder Member and Group and Communications Head of the Indian Extracellular Vesicles Society (IEVS), India. She currently chairs the Annual Meeting Planning Committee (AMPC) of the Immunology and Microbiology Section at ARVO (2024–2026) and was selected for the 2023–2024 cohort of the ARVO Women’s Leadership Development Program.
