Biography

Mohammad Javed Ali is an internationally recognized oculoplastic surgeon specializing in state-of-the-art lacrimal surgeries and is a leader in advances of lacrimal drainage sciences. He currently heads the Govindram Seksaria Institute of Dacryology at LVPEI, while also serving as the Distinguished Alumni Chair of Ophthalmology and the Editor-in-Chief of Seminar in Ophthalmology. He holds international professorships at the National University of Singapore, University of Shanghai, Krasnov Research Institute in Russia, and at WIM, Warsaw.

Dr Javed completed his basic medical education and MS in Ophthalmology from the NTR University of Health Sciences, Hyderabad. He obtained a fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (FRCGP), UK, in 2003 and of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS) in 2008. He also completed his fellowship in orbital surgery in 2008, followed by a second fellowship in ophthalmic plastic surgery, ocular oncology, and aesthetic facial plastic surgery in 2010, and was awarded the J C Bose National Fellowship in 2023. He completed his working PhD on ‘glycobiology of lacrimal drainage system’ in 2018 from the University of Hyderabad. He later trained in rhinology under Professor Peter-John Wormald from Australia.

He is one of the few recipients of the Senior Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship Award by the AvH Foundation, Germany, under the Experienced Researcher category, one of the most prestigious recognitions in the research world. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and is a JC Bose Fellow, the highest scientific award by the Government of India. He was honored by the ‘2020 American Academy of Ophthalmology Lester T Jones Award’ for significant scientific contributions to the science of ophthalmic plastic surgery. His other recognitions include the Dr P Siva Reddy Gold Medal in Ophthalmology, Dr Pathak Medal in Ophthalmology, Mazher Foundation Award for outstanding academic performance, Vengal Rao Medal, Raghavachary Medal, Ranga Reddy Endowment Award, Honavar Award, and Sunayna Medal.

He has described three new diseases of the lacrimal system along with their classifications and clinicopathologic profiles. He was honored with the Healthcare Leadership Award for his research and innovations in dacryology and received the 2015 ASOPRS Merrill Reeh Award for his path-breaking work on etiopathogenesis of punctal stenosis. His textbook “Principles and Practice of Lacrimal Surgery” is the most comprehensive treatise on the subject, and his other work ‘Atlas of Lacrimal Drainage Disorders’ is a first-of-its-kind in the field.

Apart from Editor-in-Chief, he holds additional positions as Associate Editor, Assistant Editor, and Section Editor on the boards of 24 mainstream journals and is a reviewer for 40+ major journals. For his contributions to science, he has been honoured by ophthalmic societies in the Philippines, Israel, and Poland with honorary life memberships.

His areas of research are molecular pathogenesis of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction, molecular anatomy of the lacrimal drainage pathways, and minimally invasive endoscopic lacrimal surgeries. He has 704 publications to his credit and has delivered 401 conference lectures, including 21 keynote addresses, conducted 28 instruction courses and 34 live surgical workshops, and has been honoured with over 44 national and international awards.
