Biography

Dr. Vivek Singh is a distinguished expert in ocular regenerative medicine and a senior faculty member at the Centre for Ocular Regeneration. He completed his Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara and earned his Ph.D. from the School of Biotechnology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. He further advanced his research training through a four-year postdoctoral fellowship at the prestigious Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA.

Dr. Singh is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to corneal biology and regenerative therapeutics. He developed India’s preclinical models for corneal scarring and limbal stem cell deficiency, significantly advancing translational research in ocular surface disorders. His groundbreaking work on limbal mesenchymal stem cell transplantation has led to a successful phase 1 clinical trial and a patent. His research spans biomimetic corneal extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogels, stem cell biology, bioengineering, and bioprinting, with a focus on corneal wound healing and ocular surface disease (Like SJS, GVHD and Allergic conjunctivitis), dry eye disease, and innovative biomaterials for corneal repair and replacement. Under his leadership, his team has secured DCGI approval for two clinical trials involving novel cell-based therapies, underscoring his translational impact. Dr. Singh has also developed a robust and low-cost encapsulation technology for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), enabling their safe transport and expanding access to regenerative therapies in remote and resource-limited settings across India. He holds multiple international patents related to limbal and stromal cell-based treatments for corneal scars and injuries.

A highly accomplished researcher, Dr. Singh has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and has secured more than 20 national and international research grants, along with numerous prestigious awards. His editorial contributions include serving as an Editor for Scientific Reports and Associate Editor for Frontiers in Medicine. More than a dozen students have been awarded PhD degrees and fellowships under his guidance. A majority of them are currently pursuing advanced research or postdoctoral studies at renowned universities and institutions worldwide. At present, he supervises eight PhD scholars, along with several Junior Research Fellows (JRFs), Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs), and project assistants working under his mentorship.

His recent honors include being named a Tata Innovation Fellow (2024), being elected a Life Member of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), and induction as a Fellow of the Telangana Academy of Sciences. He also serves as a member of the Annual Meeting Program Committee for the Cornea Section at ARVO, USA. He has been featured in the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% World Scientists Ranking since 2024. Dr. Singh received the Young Scientist Award (2017) at the 86th Annual Conference of the Society of Biological Chemists (India).

In his leisure, Dr. Singh enjoys travelling and exploring global cuisines. He is also passionate about badminton and swimming, and takes a keen interest in following international politics and sports.
