The Bijayananda Patnaik Eye Centre - An epitome of philanthropic convergence

The extension of LVPEI’s frontiers continued further with the inauguration of the network’s eighteenth secondary eye care centre, The Bijayananda Patnaik Eye Centre in Keonjhar, North Odisha. Inaugurated on 1 March 2018, it is a true tribute to the Late Dr Bijayananda Patnaik who was greatly known for his contribution of introducing many high-class methodologies in Retina speciality treatment in India.  This centre has a special significance as it is the product of the exceptional philanthropic spirit of multiple ophthalmologists - donation of ancestral property in the heart of the town by Dr Rajinder Kalsi Patnaik in memory of her late husband, Dr Bijayananda Patnaik, both renowned Retina specialists of New Delhi; and with funding through the Combat Blindness International of Madison, Wisconsin, USA, founded by Professor Suresh Chandra, another renowned Retina specialist. We are also deeply indebted to Dr Catherine Taylor of Jack Deloss Taylor Charitable Trust, USA, for providing significant funding in memory of her father Jack Deloss Taylor that made this centre a reality.

With primary focus on half a million people around Keonjhar, one of the five tribal regions of Odisha state, accessibility and affordability of quality eye care is no more a challenge for the people in this area.
